you

can’t

to

quit

smoking

to

improve

your

own

health,

do

it

for

your

kids’

hearing.

Teenagers

who

have

been

exposed

to

secondhand

smoke

have

about

double

the

risk

of

hearing

loss

of

those

who

had

little

or

no

exposure,

say

researchers

from

the

New

York

University

School

of

Medicine.They

tested

more

than

1,500

teenagers

aged

12

to

19

for

blood

levels

of

cotinine,

a

byproduct

of

nicotine

that

forms

when

people

are

exposed

to

cigarette

smoke,

and

then

tested

their

ability

to

hear

high

,

medium,

and

lowfrequency

sounds.The

more

smoke

the

teens

had

been

exposed

to,

the

greater

their

risk

of

hearing

loss.

Those

with

the

highest

levels

of

exposure

had

nearly

three

times

the

risk

of

hearing

loss.Hearing

loss

was

especially

marked

in

the

mid

to

highfrequency

range,which

meansthe

adolescents

may

have

difficulty

understanding

human

speech.That

could

cause

problems

in

school,

where

kids

may

be

labeled

trouble

makers.Surprisingly,some

80

percent

of

these

kids

had

no

idea

that

they

had

hearing

loss.More

than

half

of

American

children

and

teenagers

are

exposed

to

secondhand

smoke

in

their

homes.

This

exposure

increases

children’s

risk

of

lung

cancer,

learning

disabilities,

heart

disease,

and

other

diseases.Scientists

suggest

that

parents

minimize

their

children’s

exposure

to

that

all

children

exposed

to

secondhand

smoke

should

dCWhat

makes

you

grow?

While

rolling

many

ideas

around

in

my

head

to

write

this

piece,

I

narrowed

my

focus

a

bit

and

chose:

family

and

sense

of

purpose.

My

family

keeps

me

excited

to

be

alive

—beginning

the

day

with

a

morning

kiss

from

the

man

I

love.

He

is

there

to

listen

and

guide,

to

laugh

and

sigh,

to

explore

and

relax,

and

to

make

each

day

meaningful.

Together

we

have

three

delightful

children.

Even

though

they

caused

various

gray

hairs

over

the

years,

they

have

also

provided

love

and

laughter.

Friends

fall

into

the

family

category

as

well.

Although

they

are

not

cut

of

the

same

cloth,

they

are

part

of

the

same

quilt.

True

friends

are

often

as

giving

and

maybe

even

more

giving

as

family.

Even

though

our

friends

enter

our

life

later

than

our

family,

strong

relation

exists.

In

fact,

sometimes

friends

know

us

better

than

family.

The

second

drive

is

a

sense

of

purpose.

While

impossible

to

describe,

it

is

very

easy

to

picture

as

we

think

of

everything

of

value

that

touches

us.

A

purpose

may

be

a

happy

family,

home

life,

and

so

on.

Actually

in

most

cases

it

is

a

bination

of

all

these

as

they

affect

our

lives

deeply.

Purpose

is

new,

fresh,

exciting

and

always

changing.

You’re

taking

up

the

same

job

each

day

except

that

sometimes

you

are

challenged.

I

always

wanted

to

be

a

teacher,

for

example,

and

I

chose

junior

high

French.

However,

over

the

years

my

tasks

changed

so

that

I

had

various

chances

to

teach

K12

and

beyond

in

a

wide

range

of

subjects,

levels

and

school

districts.

I

remained

in

the

same

profession

for

more

than

40

years

but

never

in

the

same

setting.

28.

What

did

the

author

do

before

writing

this

article?

A.

She

chose

her

own

family

as

the

main

topic

for

writing.

B.

She

studied

many

families

in

detail

for

some

ideas.

C.

She

took

some

concerned

drives

into

consideration.

D.

She

had

a

quick

mind

in

writing.

29.

What’s

the

author’s

attitude

to

her

marriage?

A.

Curious.

B.

Puzzled.

C.

Sad.

D.

Satisfied.

30.

What

is

the

closest

meaning

of

the

underlined

sentences

in

Paragraph

3?

A.

Though

not

born

into

a

family,

friends

are

considered

life

mates.

B.

Friends

wear

different

clothes

but

sleep

on

the

same

bed.

C.

A

friend

in

need

is

a

friend

in

deed.

D.

Blood

is

thicker

than

water.31.

What

can

be

inferred

from

the

last

paragraph?

A.

Everyone

has

his

own

purpose.

B.

Purpose

needs

to

be

flexible.

C.

Teachers

must

be

knowledgeable.

D.

Teaching

is

very

difficult

in

America.DEvery

parent

wants

the

best

start

in

life

for

their

children

and

there

is

no

better

gift

to

give

our

children

than

teaching

them

to

learn

to

read.

However,

in

today’s

busy

lives

we

as

parents

cannot

always

spend

as

much

time

as

we

would

like

sharing

books

with

our

children.

Now

there

is

another

exciting

medium

to

get

kids

reading

eBooks.

These

are

not

meant

as

replacements

for

paper

books

but

another

way

to

expose

children

to

reading.

There

have

been

some

huge

leaps

forward

in

the

development

of

eBooks

for

children,

especially

those

that

have

been

designed

about

how

kids

learn

to

read.

Now

there

are

eBooks

that

read

children

the

stories

while

emphasizing

the

words

to

teach

children

about

fluency,

and

improve

sound

/

word

recognition.

These

eBooks

can

be

used

later

as

the

children

bee

independent

readers.

Without

having

to

wait

for

adult

intervention

(介入),

children

can

try

and

sound

out

a

word

while

they

are

reading,

but

if

they

get

stuck

they

can

hear

it

spoken

again

by

clicking

on

the

word.

Children

learn

by

repetition

and

we

all

know

how

kids

can

want

the

same

story

over

and

over

again!

So

they

can

listen

to

the

story

a

number

of

times

and

learn

the

associations

between

the

sounds

and

the

words.

There

is

also

a

prehension/

memory

quiz

to

make

sure

the

children

have

listened

and

understood

the

story.

And

you

do

not

need

a

special

or

expensive

reading

equipment.

They

can

be

downloaded

straight

to

your

PC.

As

a

parent

myself

I

know

how

much

the

kids

love

to

spend

time

on

the

puter.

Now

they

can

use

screen

time

in

an

enjoyable

and

educational

way.

Having

picture

books

that

really

e

to

life

with

animated

illustrations

is

just

magical.

Even

reluctant

(不情愿的)

readers

are

engaged.

本文通过我们一家人为一位失业,但有一大家人需要抚养的乞讨者提供帮助的事情,告诉我们帮助别人也就是帮助自己。

41.D

语境为:当我们一家人去超市的时候,看到了一位失业但还有一大家人需要抚养的乞讨者。spot“发现;认出”,符合语境。42.C

此处指那位乞讨者举着一个牌子,上面写着:“失业,一大家人需要抚养”,广告牌、纸牌上写着用read或say。

43.C

根据后文可知这类现象在我们这个区域是不常见的。

44.A

根据上文我看到了“Lost

my

job.

Family

to

Feed.”可知那位乞讨者处于困难时期。

45.A

此处指我要求每位孩子都为那位乞讨者买他可能喜欢的东西。appreciate“欣赏;喜欢”。

46.B

根据上文孩子不知道我的态度,所以问的问题不肯定,应该是犹豫地问父母。

47.C

结合语境可知我们也并不富裕,因此作者认为有时从我们所需要的而不是我们所富有的给予别人是我们需要做的事情,这里的选项abundance与上文的need对应。

48.D

孩子建议给他买一个礼品卡,而我们经济也并不富裕,因此
