“Sofar,theremovalofammoniafromwastewaterwasthoughttobedependentononlypH,
temperature,andairsupply.Howeverwehaveshownthatan.electricfieldcanalsoactasa
modulator(调节器)ofthisprocess,“saysProf.Young-ChaeSong,theleadinvestigatoronthis
study.
Prof.Songandhisteamusedacombinationofliveexperimentswithanammoniaremovaltank
anddeeplearningtounderstandhowelectricfieldsofdifferentstrengthsinfluencetheefficiencyof
ammoniaremovalfromwastewater.Theyfoundthatelectricfieldswithanalternatingcurrentof50
MHzandapowerof15V/cmsignificantlyimprovetheammoniaremovalefficiency,increasingit
from51%to94%,evenundersub-standardconditions.Therefore,improvedammoniayieldscould
beachievedwhileconsiderablyreducingtheconsumptionofenergyandchemicals.
Prof.Songcomments,4tOurfindingsshowedthatelectricfieldapplicationprovidesasimilar
efficiencyofammoniaremovaltoconventionalmethodsatamuchlowertemperature,airsupply,
andpH.Moreover,theenergyneededtopowertheelectricfieldisaminutepartoftheenergy
requiredtoachievethese4excellent5conditions.
Indeed,thisnewelectricfield-coupledplatformcouldprovideamoreeconomicalwayof
getting-ammoniafromwastewaterandreducingthecarbonfootprintassociatedwiththisprocess.
