andknowallofthethingssheknew.SoIcarriedaroundabook,andeachnight,justtobelikeher,Iwouldpretend
tobereading.
Thisishoweveryonelearnedtoread.Wewouldstartoffwithsentences,thenparagraphs,andthenstories.It
seemedanunendingjourney,butevenasasix-year-oldgirlIrealizedthatknowinghowtoreadcouldopenmany
doors.Whenmomsaid,'*TheC-A-N-D-Yishiddenonthetopshelf,MIknewwherethecandywas.Myprogressin
readingraisedmycuriosity,andIwantedtoknoweverything.Ioftenfoundmyselftellingmymomtodrivemore
slowly,sothatIcouldreadalloftheroadsignswepassed.

Yet,nowthatI'mgrowingandtheworldIonceknewasbeingsosimpleisbecomingmorecomplex,Ifind
myselfneedingawaytoescape.Byopeninganovel,Icanleavebehindmyburdensandenterintoawonderfuland
mysteriousworldwhereIamnowanewcharacter.IntheseworldsIcanbecomeanyone.Idon'thavetowrite
