Peoplehavewonderedforalongtimehowtheirpersonalitiesandbehaviorsare
formed.It'snoteasytoexplainwhyonepersonisintelligentandanotherisnot,orwhy
oneiscooperativeandanotheriscompetitive.
Socialscientistsare,ofcourse,extremelyinterestedinthesetypesof
question.Theywanttoexplainwhywepossesscertaincharacteristicsandexhibit
certainbehaviors.Therearenoclearanswersyet,buttwodistinctschoolsofthought
onthematterhavedeveloped.Asonemightexpect,thetwoapproachesarevery
differentfromeachother,andthereisagreatdealofdebatebetweenproponentsof
eachtheory.Theargumentisoftenconvenientlyreferredtoasnaturevs.nurture.
Thosewhosupportthe“nature“sideoftheconflictbelievethatour
personalitiesandbehaviorpatternsarelargelydeterminedbybiologicalandgenetic
factors.Thatourenvironmenthaslittle,ifanything,todowithourabilities,
characteristicsandbehavioriscentraltothistheory.Takentoanextreme,thistheory
maintainsthatourbehaviorispredetermined(注定)tosuchagreatdegreethatweare
almostcompletelygovernedbyourinstincts(本能).
Proponentsoftheanurture''theory,or,astheyareoftencalled,behaviorists,
claimthatourenvironmentismoreimportantthanourbiologicallybasedinstinctsin
determininghowwewillact.Behavioristsseehumansasbeingswhosebehavioris
almostcompletelyshapedbytheirsurroundings.Theirviewofthehumanbeingis
quitemechanistic;theymaintainthat,likemachines,humansrespondto
environmentalstimuli(somethingthathelpssb./sth.todevelopbetterandmore
quickly)asthebasisoftheirbehavior.
Thesocialandpoliticalconnectionsofthesetwotheoriesaresignificant.Inthe

test.Thisleadssome“nature“proponentstoconcludethatblacksaregenetically
worsethanwhites.Behaviorists,incontrast,saythatthedifferencesinscoresaredue
tothefactthatblacksareoftenrobbedofmanyoftheeducationalandother
environmentaladvantagesthatwhitesenjoy,andthat,asaresult,theydonotdevelop
thesameresponsesthatwhitesdo.
Neitherofthesetheoriescanyetfullyexplainhumanbehavior.Infact,itisquite
likelythatthekeytoourbehaviorliessomewherebetweenthesetwoextremes.That
