in1921,hegaveittocharity.Whenamagazineofferedhimanamazingsumforanarticle,hereject-editcontemptuously."What?"heexclaimed.
"DotheythinkIamaprizefighter?"Buthefinally
wrotethearticleafterarguingthemagazineintocuttingthepriceinhalf.Itissaidthathedeclined
hispresentpostattheInstituteforAdvancedStudyatPrincetononthegroundthatthesalarywas
preposterouslymunificent,andwaspersuadedtoacceptonlybythepromiseofanenormouspaycut.

guaranteehittingdeadlines.ButapaperrecentlypublishedintheJournalofConsumerResearch
suggestsitmay,infact,betrue--aslongasthebusypersonconceptualisesthedeadlineintheright
way.
YanpingTuoftheUniversityofChicagoandDilipSomanoftheUniversityofTorontoexaminedhowindividualsgoaboutboththinkingaboutandcompletingtasks.Previousstudieshave
shownthatsuchactivityprogressesthroughfourdistinctphases:predecision,post-decision(but
preaction),actionandreview.Itisthoughtthatwhatmotivatestheshiftfromthedecision-making
stagestothedoing-somethingstageisachangeinmindset.
Humanbeingsareadeliberativesort,weighingtheprosandconsoffutureactionsandremainingopentootherideasandinfluences.However,onceadecisionistaken,themindbecomesmore"implemental"andfocusesonthetaskathand.

MsTuandDrSomanadviseintheirpaperthat
"thekeystepingettingthingsdoneistoget
started."Butwhatdrivesthat?Theybelievethekeythatunlockstheimplementalmodeliesinhow
peoplecategorisetime.Theysuggestthattasksaremorelikelytobeviewedwithanimplemental
mindsetifanimposeddeadlineiscognitivelylinkedto"now"--aso-calledlike-the-presentscenario.Thatmightbeafuturedatewithinthesamemonthorcalendaryear,orpeggedtoaneventwitha
familiarspotinthemind´stimeline(beinggivenataskatChristmas,say,withadeadlineofEaster).
Conversely,theysuggest,adeadlineplacedoutsidesuchmentalconstructs(being"unlike-the-present")existsmerelyasacircleonacalendar,andassuchismorelikelytobeconsidereddelibera-tivelyandthenignoreduntilthelastminute.
Tofleshoutthisidea,thepaircarriedoutfivesetsoftests,withvolunteersrangingfromfarmersinIndiatoundergraduatestudentsinToronto.Inonetest,thefarmerswereofferedafinancialincentivetoopenabankaccountandmakeadepositwithinsixmonths.Theresearcherspredicted
thoseapproachedinJunewouldconsideradeadlinebeforeDecember31staslike-the-present.
ThoseapproachedinJuly,bycontrast,receivedadeadlineintothenextyear,andwereexpectedto
thinkoftheirdeadlineasunlike-the-present.Thedistinctionworked.Thosewithadeadlineinthe
sameyearwerenearlyfourtimesmorelikelytoopentheaccountimmediatelyasthoseforwhomthe
deadlinelayinthefollowingyear.Arbitrarythoughcalendarsmaybeinparsingupthecontinuousflow
oftime,humansparsetheirconceptoftimeinlinewiththem.
Theeffectcanmanifestitselfinevensubtlerways.Inanothersetofexperiments,undergraduate
studentsweregivenacalendaronaWednesdayandwereaskedtosuggestanappropriatedaytocarryoutcertaintasksbeforethefollowingSunday.ThetrickwasthatsomeweregivenacaleMarwith
alloftheweekdayscolouredpurple,withweekendsinbeige(makingavisualdistinctionbetweena
WednesdayandthefollowingSunday).Othersweregivenacalendarinwhicheveryotherweek,MondaytoSunday,wasasolidcolour(meaningthataWednesdayandthefollowingSundaywere
