guaranteehittingdeadlines.ButapaperrecentlypublishedintheJournalofConsumerResearch

suggestsitmay,infact,betrue--aslongasthebusypersonconceptualisesthedeadlineintheright

way.

YanpingTuoftheUniversityofChicagoandDilipSomanoftheUniversityofTorontoexaminedhowindividualsgoaboutboththinkingaboutandcompletingtasks.Previousstudieshave

shownthatsuchactivityprogressesthroughfourdistinctphases:predecision,post-decision(but

preaction),actionandreview.Itisthoughtthatwhatmotivatestheshiftfromthedecision-making

stagestothedoing-somethingstageisachangeinmindset.

Humanbeingsareadeliberativesort,weighingtheprosandconsoffutureactionsandremainingopentootherideasandinfluences.However,onceadecisionistaken,themindbecomesmore"implemental"andfocusesonthetaskathand.

MsTuandDrSomanadviseintheirpaperthat

started."Butwhatdrivesthat?Theybelievethekeythatunlockstheimplementalmodeliesinhow

peoplecategorisetime.Theysuggestthattasksaremorelikelytobeviewedwithanimplemental

mindsetifanimposeddeadlineiscognitivelylinkedto"now"--aso-calledlike-the-presentscenario.Thatmightbeafuturedatewithinthesamemonthorcalendaryear,orpeggedtoaneventwitha

Conversely,theysuggest,adeadlineplacedoutsidesuchmentalconstructs(being"unlike-the-present")existsmerelyasacircleonacalendar,andassuchismorelikelytobeconsidereddelibera-tivelyandthenignoreduntilthelastminute.

Tofleshoutthisidea,thepaircarriedoutfivesetsoftests,withvolunteersrangingfromfarmersinIndiatoundergraduatestudentsinToronto.Inonetest,thefarmerswereofferedafinancialincentivetoopenabankaccountandmakeadepositwithinsixmonths.Theresearcherspredicted

thoseapproachedinJunewouldconsideradeadlinebeforeDecember31staslike-the-present.

ThoseapproachedinJuly,bycontrast,receivedadeadlineintothenextyear,andwereexpectedto

thinkoftheirdeadlineasunlike-the-present.Thedistinctionworked.Thosewithadeadlineinthe

sameyearwerenearlyfourtimesmorelikelytoopentheaccountimmediatelyasthoseforwhomthe

deadlinelayinthefollowingyear.Arbitrarythoughcalendarsmaybeinparsingupthecontinuousflow

oftime,humansparsetheirconceptoftimeinlinewiththem.

Theeffectcanmanifestitselfinevensubtlerways.Inanothersetofexperiments,undergraduate

studentsweregivenacalendaronaWednesdayandwereaskedtosuggestanappropriatedaytocarryoutcertaintasksbeforethefollowingSunday.ThetrickwasthatsomeweregivenacaleMarwith
