Headlineinflationrisesslightlyto5.9%inJuly2023despiteadeclineinmostOECDcountries
Year-on-yearinflationintheOECD,asmeasuredbytheConsumerPriceIndex(CPI),roseto5.9%inJuly2023,after5.7%inJune,thefirstincreasesinceOctober2022(Figures1and3).ThisincreasewasmainlydrivenbyasharpriseininflationinTürkiye.ExcludingTürkiye,OECDinflationisestimatedtohavebeenbroadlystableinJuly.Fallsininflationwererecordedin26of38OECDcountries,ofwhich17experienceddeclinesabove0.5percentagepoints.(Table1).
EnergyinflationintheOECDremainednegative,atminus7.5%,afterminus9.6%inJune.Itwasnegativeinyear-on-yeartermsin30OECDcountries,anditdeclinedin22countriesrelativetothepreviousmonth.Foodinflationcontinuedtofallatthesamepaceasinthepreviousmonth,reaching9.2%inJuly,itslowestlevelsinceFebruary2022,after10.1%inJune.Inflationlessfoodandenergy(coreinflation)roseslightly,to6.7%from6.6%inJune.
Year-on-yearinflationintheG7wasstableat3.9%inJuly.ThelargestdeclinewasobservedintheUnitedKingdomwhereenergyinflationfellsharply.However,theinflationrateintheUnitedKingdomisstillthehighestrateamongG7countries.HeadlineinflationalsodeclinedinItaly,FranceandGermany.Bycontrast,headlineinflationincreasedinCanadaandtheUnitedStates,neverthelessheadlineinflationratesremainedmorethan2.5percentagepointsbelowtheaverageOECDrate.HeadlineinflationwasstableinJapan.Non-foodandnon-energyitemsremainedthemaincontributorstoheadlineinflationinallG7countriesinJuly(Figure2).
Intheeuroarea,year-on-yearinflationasmeasuredbytheHarmonisedIndexofConsumerPrices(HICP),continuedtodecline,albeitataslowerpacethaninprevioustwomonths,reaching5.3%inJuly2023,after5.5%inJune.InAugust2023,accordingtoEurostat’s
flashestimate,
inflationisestimatedtohavebeenstableintheeuroarea.Thismasksvariabilityacrossmemberstates.HICPinflationisestimatedtohaveincreasedto5.7%inFranceafter5.1%inJulywithasharpriseinenergyinflation,whileheadlineinflationestimateshavebeenbroadlystableinGermanyanddeclininginItaly.EnergydeflationintheeuroareaisestimatedtohavebeenlesspronouncedinAugustthaninJulyandcoreinflationisestimatedtohaveslowedto5.3%,after5.5%inJuly.
IntheG20,year-on-yearinflationincreased,to5.8%inJuly2023,from5.5%inJune.InflationincreasedinIndiaforthesecondconsecutivemonthandinBrazilafteroneyearofcontinuingdecrease.Bycontrast,headlineinflationdeclinedinArgentina,SouthAfrica,SaudiArabia,IndonesiaandChina,wheretotalinflationwasnegativeforthefirsttimesinceFebruary2021.
