5.JOBPROBLEMSFORCOLLEGEGRADUATESEachyearthousandsuponthousandsofgraduatesfloodintothejobmarketwavingtheircollegediplomasandcertificatesexpectingbetterjobsintheirspecializedfieldsonlytobefrustratedanddisappointed.Accordingtothechartsonly35percentofgraduatesin2006couldfindjobsrelatedtotheirmajorscomparedwith89percentin1981whenChinahaditsfirstcollegegraduatesaftertheCulturalRevolution.Whydocollegegraduatesfinditincreasinglydifficulttogetasatisfactoryandrewardingjob?Onereasonperhapsisthatmanycollegesanduniversitiesfailtogeartheircurriculatothedevelopmentofindustries.Degreecoursesofferedinmanycollegesanduniversitiesaresooutdatedandirrelevantandimpracticalthatemployersaswellasstudentsthemselvesfindithardtotranslatetheirbookknowledgeintorealjobskills.Noemployerswanttoknowabouttheirmind-broadeningandhorizon-wideningqualitiesandfewarcwillingtospendtimeandbudgettrainingrawrecruits.Secondlythereisanoversupplyofgraduateswithacertainspecialtyandthisoversupplyisincreasing.Alreadythereisanoverabundanceoflawyersexecutivesecretariessalesengineersandotherspecialists.Yetcollegesandgraduateschoolscontinueeveryyeartoturnoutmoregraduatesofthesespecialtiestocompeteforjobsthataren'tthere.Theresultisthatmanyofthemcannotentertheprofessionsforwhichtheyaretrainedandhavetotakeotherjobswhichevendonotrequireacollegedegree.Ontheotherhandthereistremendousneedforteachersresearchworkersandpublicofficials.Butthedisparityinpaybetweenintellectualworkandbusinessmanagementhasfrustratedthehopeandambitionofgraduateswhomajorineducationadministrationandliberalarts.Collegegraduatesaresotospeakvaluableresourcesinourcountryandnoonehastherighttowastethewealthoftalent.Theproblemstheyencounterinjobhuntingdeservemoreattentionfromthecollegesandthegovernment.Thecollegesshouldgetstudentsoutoftheivorytowerandgeartheircoursestotherealneedsofindustryandbusiness;whilethegovernmentshouldprovidecollegegraduateswithmorevocationalopportunitiesbetter'workingconditionsanddecentsalariessothatmoreandmoregraduateswouldliketodevotetheirlifetoacademicstudiesandscientificresearch.JOBPROBLEMSFORCOLLEGEGRADUATESEachyearthousandsuponthousandsofgraduatesfloodintothejobmarket,wavingtheircollegediplomasandcertificates,expectingbetterjobsintheirspecializedfields,onlytobefrustratedanddisappointed.Accordingtothecharts,only35percentofgraduatesin2006couldfindjobsrelatedtotheirmajors,comparedwith89percentin1981whenChinahaditsfirstcollegegraduatesaftertheCulturalRevolution.Whydocollegegraduatesfinditincreasinglydifficulttogetasatisfactoryandrewardingjob?Onereasonperhapsisthatmanycollegesanduniversitiesfailtogeartheircurriculatothedevelopmentofindustries.Degreecoursesofferedinmanycollegesanduniversitiesaresooutdatedandirrelevantandimpracticalthatemployersaswellasstudentsthemselvesfindithardtotranslatetheirbookknowledgeintorealjobskills.Noemployerswanttoknowabouttheirmind-broadeningandhorizon-wideningqualities,andfewarcwillingtospendtimeandbudgettrainingrawrecruits.Secondly,thereisanoversupplyofgraduateswithacertainspecialty,andthisoversupplyisincreasing.Alreadythereisanoverabundanceoflawyers,executivesecretaries,salesengineersandotherspecialists.Yetcollegesandgraduateschoolscontinueeveryyeartoturnoutmoregraduatesofthesespecialtiestocompeteforjobsthataren'tthere.Theresultisthatmanyofthemcannotentertheprofessionsforwhichtheyaretrainedandhavetotakeotherjobswhichevendonotrequireacollegedegree.Ontheotherhand,thereistremendousneedforteachers,researchworkersandpublicofficials.Butthedisparityinpaybetweenintellectualworkandbusinessmanagementhasfrustratedthehopeandambitionofgraduateswhomajorineducation,administrationandliberalarts.Collegegraduatesare,sotospeak,valuableresourcesinourcountryandnoonehastherighttowastethewealthoftalent.Theproblemstheyencounterinjobhuntingdeservemoreattentionfromthecollegesandthegovernment.Thecollegesshouldgetstudentsoutoftheivorytowerandgeartheircoursestotherealneedsofindustryandbusiness;whilethegovernmentshouldprovidecollegegraduateswithmorevocationalopportunities,better'workingconditionsanddecentsalariessothatmoreandmoregraduateswouldliketodevotetheirlifetoacademicstudiesandscientificresearch.
