SustainedSilentReading(SSR)isthepracticeofprovidingashortperiodofclasstimeforstudentstoreadsilentlywhatevertheychooseaccordingtotheirinterests.SSRprogramscanbeofferedatactuallyanygradelevel.However,ittakesagreatdealoftime,effort,andknow-howtoputasuccessfulSSRprogramintooperation.IfirstrecognizedthiswhenIwasahighschoolteachertwentyyearsago.Thoughsomeofmystudentswerehappytobeallowedtoselectandreadbooksinclass,manynevertrulydivedintotheirreading.Iknewthattheremustbewaystoimprovetheimplementation(实施)ofmySSRprogram,butIwasn'tsurewhattheywere.

Yearslater,whenIreturnedtotheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia,IbegananalyzingalargesampleofSSRstudiestodeterminewhatmadethemeffectiveandfoundthatsuccessfulprogramssharedfivekeyfactors:easyaccesstoreadingmaterials,sufficientlyinterestingmaterials,teachers'encouragement,follow-upactivitiesandreadingatleasttwiceaweek.
