Custisestate

uponhismarriage,worthapproximately$100,000,andmanagedtheremainderonbehalfofMartha'schildren,forwhomhesincerelycared.AmericanRevolution(1775–1783)

During

the

American

Revolution,

he

led

the

colonial

forces

to

victory

over

the

British

and

became

a

national

hero.CongresscreatedtheContinentalArmyonJune14,thenextdayitselectedWashingtonascommander-in-chief.

Hefailedinsomebattles.FinallyWashingtonstrategizedwiththeFrenchtoagainsttheBritish,Thearmywasformallydisbandedafterpeacein1783,andWashingtonresignedhiscommissionascommander-in-chiefonDecember23,1783.ConstitutionalConvention

Washington‘sretirementwasshort-lived.HewaspersuadedtoattendtheConstitutionalConventioninPhiladelphiaduringthesummerof1787.Presidency(1789–1797)

TheElectoralCollegeunanimouslyelectedWashingtonasthefirstpresidentin1789,andagain1792.Afterreluctantlyservingasecondterm,Washingtonrefusedtorunforathird,establishingthetraditionofamaximumoftwotermsforapresident.Washingtonprovedanableadministrator,andestablishedmanyprecedentsinthefunctionsofthepresidency,includingmessagestoCongressandthecabinetformofgovernment.DeathWashingtondiedathomearound10
