TherehasbeenarecordofsignificantinteractionbetweenEasternandWesternmedicalsystemsforseveralhundredyears.However,thefirstpartofthe20thcenturywasverymuchaonewayflowofinformationasthedevelopmentsinWesternmedicinefloodedintoChina.InWesterncountriesTraditionalChineseMedicine(TCM)wasrelativelyunknownuntilPresidentNixon’sgroundbreakingvisittoChinain1971andtheaccountsoftheuseofacupunctureforpaincontrolappearedintheNewYorkTimes.

SincethentherehasbeenarapidgrowthintheawarenessanduseofTCMinWesterncountries.UniversitiesaroundtheworldarenowofferingdegreesinTCM.IntheUKthereareseveralthousandpractitionersofferingherbalmedicines,acupunctureandothertechniqueswithinaWesternclinicalsetting.

Thereareseveralreasonsforthisrapidriseinpopularity.TheinitialappealoftheforeignculturewasreplacedbyresearchreportsindicatingtheeffectivenessofTCMtreatments.ThegroundbreakingstudiesonthesuccessfuluseofChineseherbalmedicinesinthetreatmentofeczemaatGreatOrmondStreetHospitalhitthenationalheadlinesandestablishedmedicaljournals.

TCMisnowfrequentlyusedforthisandmanyotherformsofskindisease.AlongsidetheevidencesupportingtheuseofTCMtherewasalsoagrowingsenseofdissatisfactionwiththelimitationsofmodernmedicaltreatment.Thelackofaholisticperspective,shortconsultationtimesandthesideeffectsofpharmaceuticaldrugshaveindicatedthatmoreandmorepeopleareseekingadditionalformsofhealthcare.Inrecentyearsimprovedstandardsofeducationandprofessionalorganization,andanewemphasisonqualitycontrolhaveindicatedthatnowthereisanetworkofwellqualifiedTCMpractitionersofferingthebenefitsofthisancienttraditiontotheWesternpublic.
