ekidscouldbegoingtoeliteuniversitiesonafullridescholarshipanddon’tevenrealizeit.”“Manystudentsarecomingfromasituationwherenoonearoundthemhastheexperienceofsuccessfullycompletinghighereducation,sotheyarecominginquestioningthemselvesandtheircollegeworthiness,” .Thathelpsexinwhy,asI’mFirst’sRubinoffindicated,theschoolstowhichthesestudentsendupresortingcanendupbeingsomeofthepoorestmatchesforthem.TheUniversityTennesseeinKnoxvilleoffersoneexampleofthisdilemma.AflagshipuniversityintheSouth,theschoolgraduatesjust16percentofitsfirst-generationstudents,despiteitsoverallgraduationrateof71percent.Locatedonlyafewhoursapart,TheUniversityofTennesseeandTennesseeStateareworthcomparing.TennesseeState’soverallgraduationrateisatiny39percent,butatleastithasasmallergapbetweentheesforfirst-generationstudentsandthoseoftheirpeers.Still,theUniversityofTennesseedeservescreditforbeingtransparent.Manylargeinstitutionskeepthiskindofdatasecret—oratleastmakeitincrediblydifficulttofind.TheUniversityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHill,forinstance,admitsonlythatthegraduationrateforitsfirst-generationpupilsis“muchlower”thanthepercentageofallstudentswhograduatewithinfouryears(81percent).It’sactuallyquitedifficulttofindreliablestatisticsontheissueformanyschools.Highereducationinstitutionsare,underfederallaw,requiredtoreportgraduationrates,butthesereportstypicallyonlyincludePellrecipientnumbers—notnecessarilyratesspecifictofirst-generationstudents.Otherinitiativesfailtobreakdownthedata,too.Imaginehowintimidatingitcanbeforprospectivestudentsunfamiliarwiththecomplexitiesofhighereducationtonavigatethiskindofinformationandthenidentifywhichschoolsarethebestfit.ItwasthislackofinformationthatpromptedthelaunchofI’mFirstin2013,originallyasanarmofitstotheseschoolsatgreaterfrequencyandultimaygetinandenroll,we’regoingtoraisethesuccessrate,”Rubinoffsaid,citingavarietyofcollegesrangingfromlargestateinstitutionstosmallerprivateschools.ChelseaJones,whonowdirectsstudentprogrammingatI’mFirst,wasafirst-generationcollegestudentatHoward.Likeotherstudentsnewtotheintimidatinghigher-educationworld,sheoftenstruggledonherpathtocollege.“Therewasn’treallyacollege-boundcultureatmyhighschool,”shesaid.“IwantedtogotocollegebutIdidn’treallyknowtheprocess.”Jonesbecameinvolvedwithacollege-accessprogramthroughPrincetonUniversityinhighschool.Now,sheattributesmuchofherunderstandingofcollegetothat:“ButonceIgottocampus,itwasacompleydifferentballgamethatnoonereallypreparedmefor.”Shewasfortunate,though.Howard,awell-regardedhistoricallyblackcollege,hadanarrayofresourcesforitsfirst-generationstudents,includingmatchingkidswithcounselors,connectingfirst-generationstudentstooneanother,andTRIO,anationalprogramthatsupported200studentsonHoward’scampus.Still,Jonesrepresentsasmallpercentageoffirst-generationstudentswhoareabletogainentryintomoreeliteuniversities,whichareoftenknownforrobustfinancialaidpackagesandremarkablyhighgraduationratesforfirst-generationstudents.(Harvard,forexample,boastsasix-yeargraduationrateforunderrepresentedChristianVazquez,afirst-generationYalegraduate,isanotherexception,hissuccessstorysettinghimfarapartfromstudentssuchasNijay.“There’salotofsupportatYale,toanextent,afterawhile,there’stoomuchsupport,”hesaid,half-jokingaboutthecountlessresourcesavailableattheschool.Studentsarecedinsmallgroupswithcounselors(trainedseniorsoncampus);theyhaveaccesstoculturalandethnicaffinity(联系groups,tutoringcentersandalsohaveasummerorientationspecificallyforfirst-generationstudents(thelatterbeingoneofthemostcommonprogramsforstudents).“Oursupportstructurewasmorelike:‘YouaregoingtogetthroughYale;youaregoingtodowell,’”hesaid,hintingatmentors(导师),staff,andprofessorswhoallprovidedsignificantsupportforstudentswholackedconfidenceabout“belonging”atsuchatopinstitution.Manyfirst-generationcollege-goershavedoubtsabouttheirabilitiestogetacollegeFirst-generationcollegestudentstendtohavemuchheavierfinancialburdensthantheirThegraduationrateoffirst-generationstudentsatNijay’suniversitywasincrediblyOnenteringcollege,NijayWilliamshadnoideahowchallengingcollegeeducationManyuniversitiessimplyrefusetoreleasetheirexactgraduationratesforfirst-generationAccordingtoamarketingexecutive,manystudentsfrom
