Gas-lubricatedbearingshavebeenwidelyusedinvariousindustrialapplicationsduetotheiruniqueadvantagessuchaslowfriction,lownoise,andhighreliability.Ingas-lubricatedbearings,thepressuredistributionplaysacriticalroleindeterminingthebearing'sperformance.Toachievebetterperformance,avariablepressuredistributionsystem,suchasavariableorifice,hasbeenintroducedtoregulatethepressuredistribution.Inthispaper,weinvestigatetheperformanceofagas-lubricatedthrustbearingwithavariablepressuredistributionsystem,i.e.,thevariablebulkfloworifice(VBFO).

ExperimentalSetup

TheexperimentalsetupconsistsofathrustbearingandtheVBFO,whichisaflatcirculardiskwithseveralorificesdrilledthroughit.Intheexperiment,theorificesareevenlydistributedontheVBFO,andtheirdiametercanbevariedbyadjustingacontrolvalve.Thethrustbearingisadouble-sidedhydrostaticthrustbearingwithadiameterof40mmandathicknessof10mm.ThebearinghasacircularcavityinthecentertoaccommodatetheVBFO.ThebearingandtheVBFOarelocatedinatestchamberwithavacuumpumpandagassource.

ExperimentalProcedure

Intheexperiment,thegasusedisairwithapressurerangeof0.1-0.5MPa.Therotationalspeedofthebearingissetat6000rpm,andtheloadisappliedatthecenterofthebearing.Thepressuredistributionismeasuredbyusingpressuretransducersplacedonthebearingsurfaces.ThepressuredistributionisthenrecordedatdifferentdiametersoftheorificesontheVBFO.

Results

TheresultsshowthattheVBFOcanregulatethepressuredistributioneffectively.Whenthediameteroftheorificesissmall,thepressureinthecenterofthebearingishigh,andthepressureattheedgesislow.Asthediameteroftheorificesincreases,thepressureinthecenterofthebearingdecreases,andthepressureattheedgesincreases.Atacertaindiameteroftheorifice,thepressuredistributionbecomesalmostuniform,whichindicatesthattheVBFOhasachievedtheoptimalpressuredistribution.Furthermore,theperformanceofthebearing,suchasthecarryingcapacityandthestiffness,alsovarieswiththediameteroftheorifices.Whentheorificediameterissmall,thecarryingcapacityofthebearingishigh,butthestiffnessislow.Astheorificediameterincreases,thecarryingcapacitydecreases,butthestiffnessincreases.

Conclusion

Inthispaper,wehaveinvestigatedtheperformanceofagas-lubricatedthrustbearingwithavariablepressuredistributionsystem,i.e.,theVBFO.TheresultsshowthattheVBFOcanregulatethepressuredistributioneffectively,andtheperformanceofthebearingvarieswiththediameteroftheorifices.Ourfindingsprovidevaluableinsightsintotheoptimaldesignofgas-lubricatedbearingswithvariablepressuredistributionsystemsforadvancedindustrialapplications.Inadditiontotheexperimentalresults,numericalsimulationswerealsoconductedtofurtherunderstandtheperformanceofthegas-lubricatedthrustbearingwiththeVBFO.Theresultsofthesimulationswereconsistentwiththoseobtainedfromtheexperiments,indicatingthattheVBFOcanachieveanoptimalpressuredistributionandimprovethebearing'sperformance.Moreover,thesimulationresultsalsoshowedthattheflowratethroughtheorificeshasasignificantimpactonthepressuredistributionandbearingperformance.Thepressuredistributioncanbefurtheroptimizedbyadjustingtheflowrate,whichprovidesanadditionalparameterforthedesignofgas-lubricatedbearingswiththeVBFO.

TheVBFOcannotonlyregulatethepressuredistributionbutalsoadjustthegasfilmthicknessofthebearing.Asthediameteroftheorificesincreases,thegasfilmthicknessdecreases,whichreducesthepowerconsumptionandimprovesthestabilityofthesystem.Therefore,theVBFOcanbeusedtoachieveabalancebetweenthebearing'sperformanceandenergyefficiency.

Inconclusion,theuseofavariablepressuredistributionsystem,suchastheVBFO,cansignificantlyimprovetheperformanceofgas-lubricatedthrustbearings.Theoptimaldiameteroftheorificescanbeobtainedtoachieveanidealpressuredistributionandbalancebetweencarryingcapacityandstiffness.Moreover,theflowratethroughtheorificescanbeadjustedtofurtheroptimizethepressuredistributionandimprovetheenergyefficiencyofthesystem.Thesefindingsprovidevaluableguidanceforthedesignandoptimizationofgas-lubricatedbearingsforvariousindustrialapplications.Additionally,theuseofvariablepressuredistributionsystemsliketheVBFOcanalsohelpmitigatetheeffectsofexternaldisturbancesonthebearing.Externaldisturbances,suchasvibrationandshock,canleadtoanunevenpressuredistribution,reducingthebearing'scarryingcapacityandstability.However,byincorporatingtheVBFO,thebearingcanadapttoexternaldisturbancesandmaintainanoptimalpressuredistribution,ensuringstableoperationandreducingwearonthebearing.

AnotheradvantageoftheVBFOisitsabilitytoself-compensate.Asthebearingwearsovertime,thepressuredistributionmaychange,leadingtoreducedperformance.However,withtheVBFO,thepressuredistributioncanbecontinuouslyadjustedtocompensateforwearandmaintainoptimalbearingperformance.

Furthermore,theuseofvariablepressuredistributionsystemscanalsoreducethedependencyonlubricatingoil.Gas-lubricatedbearingsofferadvantagessuchasreducedfriction,reducedheatgeneration,andimprovedenvironmentalperformancecomparedtotraditionaloil-lubricatedbearings.Therefore,theincorporationofvariablepressuredistributionsystemscanfurtherimprovetheefficiencyandeffectivenessofgas-lubricatedbearings,reducingrelianceonoilandimprovingenvironmentalperformance.

Insummary,theincorporationofavariablepressuredistributionsystemliketheVBFOcansignificantlyimprovetheperformanceandefficiencyofgas-lubricatedbearingsinindustrialapplications.Theabilitytoregulatepressuredistribution,adjustgasfilmthickness,andself-compensateforwearandexternaldisturbancesmakestheVBFOanattractivesolutionforimprovingbearingperformanceandreducingdependenceonlubricatingoil.TheVBFOisalsohighlycustomizable,allowingittobetailoredtothespecificapplicationrequirements.Thepressuredistributioncanbeadjustedtoaccommodatedifferentbearinggeometries,loadconditions,andoperatingspeeds.ThisflexibilityenablestheVBFOtobeusedinawiderangeofapplications,fromsmall,high-speedbearingstolarge,heavy-dutyones.

Moreover,theVBFOcanalsobeeasilyintegratedintoexistinggas-lubricatedbearingdesigns,makingitacost-effectivesolutionforupgradingexistingsystems.RetrofittingexistingsystemswiththeVBFOcanimprovetheperformanceofthebearing,leadingtoincreasedreliabilityandreducedmaintenancecosts.
