ThomaspausedandfishedforhiscigarettesburiedsomewhereonthemessofhisdeskHefoundhispacketundernealhapileofdraftsscatteredbetweenaburningpatchoulijoystickandthelatestProcalHarumLP.Heopenedthepacket;caughttheonlycigaretteleftandlitilup.Thewreathofsmokewaslikehugeandfiexiblearms,embracinghimfirmly.Hestoodupandturnedontheradio.ThelatesthitofJeffersonAirplanecouldbeheard,GraceSlickwassingingpassionately.Itwasashinyafternoon,hefeltsleepybutrelaxed.

Thomashasawonderfulsurname,Goodman.Hewasawriteranddefinitelyagoodmanaswell.Twoyearsago,ThomaslefthissmallvillageofOxwichforLondon,afreecityfulloftemptations.

Hewasusuallyquietandsensitive,maybebecauseofhisunhappychildhood.In1953,hisfatherdiedofanunexpectedillness;Thomaswasonlytwelveyearnoldthen.Lateron,arichsquireremarriedhismother.Sadly,astimewentby,hismotherwasgettingoldandherbeautywastakenaway.Quickly,hisstepfatherbecameberedwiththem.Eventoday,hecouldstillpicturehowbadlyheusedtohealhimandhowdistressedhismother"sfacialexpressionwas.

Fortunalely,hehadinheritedhismother"sbeauties,especiallyherdeepeyes.TheywereasblueastheseaofOxwich.Similarlytothesunshinereflectingonthesea,itseyeswouldshinenicely.Butmostofthetime,hiseyescontainedrebollionandgloom,whichshouldnotbelongtoa26yearsoldmanlikehim.Hewastall,whiteandthinwithshortandneathair.

“Thomas.Thomas!Hey,mate,areyoustillalive?”

“StopcallingmeC,~sh!IamJoshua.Joshua,doyouunderstand?Iamthemosthandsome,attractive,warm-heartedmaninthisworld.”Joshuawashandsomeandhewaswellawareofit.

-“Lookalthis,Thomas.Guesswhatitis?”

Joshuawasworkingasawaiterinastudentpub.Hehadsuchasexybody,whichwoulddrivebothbadgirlsandladiescrazy.Hehadbhteeyes,hook-likedeyebrowsandthickeyelashes.Hisdarkcurlyandlustroushairwasshoulderlength,assuchfashionwasamongstHippiesinthesetimes.

Thomascaredalotforthisguy,fromthefirsttimehesawhiminthepub.Itwasthenarainyday;Thomaswenttothepub,searchinginspirationforastory.WhenhesawJoshuastandingbehindthecounter,shakingcocktailsskilfully,hefeltamagicpowergoingthroughhisbody.Joshuawasacharmingman,whnwasdreamingofandfightingforfreedom.HewasthemanthatThomaswouldliketobe.

-“Sowhatisthis?"

Thomatookoverthebox,“Itisapacketofcigarette,nothing"special.”

HeglancedatJoshandfoundhewasblinkingeyesnaughtily.

-“Oh,isit…isit…?”

-“Justtryit.Youwillforgetallthepainandsadness,believeme.”

-“Andyou.”ThomasturnedhisfacetoJosh,“Youarespecial.”

Aftertheywokeup,JoshwenttoworkatthepubandThomaswentonwithhiswriting.Everythingreturnedtoreality.

ItwasobviouslynotjustacigaretteasJoshhadtoldThomas.SomeonehadintroducedJoshtoanewkindofpsychotropieeigarette,madeofhybridpoppyblendedwithmarijuana.HewantedtosharehisnewpowerfuldiscoverywithThomas.MaryPoppyhenicknamedit.

MaryPoppyallowedThomasescapingfromtherealworldtoaperfectparadise.HewasfullofappreciationofitandJoshaswell.However,hebecameweakerandpoorerbecauseofhisaddictiontoMaryPoppy.Withoutit,hewaslikearestlesschildandallthesadeventswerespringingoutofhismind.HeneededMaryPoppy.EverytimehewassmokingMaryPoppy,hesawdifferentpeopleandscenes,allofwhichwereamazing.Hewishedthathecouldneverwakeup.

Sundaynight,ThomaswenttoJosh"spubasusual.Fortwoweeks,hehaddonenothingabouthisstory.Hisbrainseemedrusted.Hethoughtthatatthismoment,abottleofwinewouldhelptorelea.sehiscreativity.AndhewasalsolookingforwardinmeetingJosh.Howwashedoingtonight?WhenhethoughtafJosh,hisheartwaswarm.Forhim,"friendship"fromJoshwasthemostvaluablethinginthiscoldcity.

Suddenly,afamiliarviewofsomeone"sbackattractedhisattention.ItwasJosh.Hewasholdingayounggirl.Shewasnotbeautifulatall,plumpbody,longmessyhair.Shewaswearingaloseflowerpatternblouseoveraminiskirt,whichwasnothidinganyofherfat.

Thomasfollowedthemsecretlyastheyexitedthepremisesintoanarrowbackstreet.Itwassurprisinglyveryquiet.Underthedimstreetlamp,hesawJoshandthegirlhuggingandkissingcrazily.Tbelampprojectedtheirdistortedshadows.Thomaswasheart-hroken.

Monday,hereceivedacallfromJosh.

-"Hi,Howareyou,myfriend?Itisreallyaniceday,isit?Whatisyourplanforteday?"

-"1sawyouwithagirllastnight."Thomas"voicewasdeepandrough.

-“Oh..oh..oh,sheismynewgirlfriend.”

-“Younevertoldmeabouther!”

-“Younevercareformyfeeling!”

-“Comeon,Thomas,IgoforherbecauseIamfondofher.1amafreespirit,youknowthat.”

Thomashungupthetelephone.

Tuesday,Joshdidnotshowup.Thomasthoughtheknewthereason.Herealisedthathehadlosthisspecialfriend.Hefeltthesameemptinessthatheonlyfeltonce,whenIrisfatherdied.

Wednesdaymorning.Itwasashinnydayagain.Birdswere.singingmerrilyoutside.Fake!Everythingwasfake!Thomaslefthistypewriterandturnedhisradioon.GraceSlick"spowerfulandpassionatevoicetouchedhisheart..HegatheredalltheMaryPoppieshehadonhisdesk,andsmokedthemoneaftertheotherone.Thesunshinewhiskedhisfaceandhesawendlesswildflowers.Theywereasredasblood.Helaiddownonthemeadowwithhisfatherandhismother.Joshwassittingbesidehim.Itwasbeautifulandpeaceful.Thomaswishedhecouldneverwakeup.Thistime,hiswishbecametrue.

Fiveminuteslater,JoshcameintoThomas"tinyflat.
