battle.
OnJuly29ththeywererelieved,atleasttemporarily.Afederalappealscourtoverturnedtheprior
decision,rulingthatMyriadGeneticscouldindeedholbpatentstotwogenssthathelpforecastawoman's
riskofbreastcancer.ThechiefexecutiveofMyriad,acompanyinUtah,saidtherulingwasablessingto
firmsandpatientsalike.
Butascompaniescontinuetheirattemptsatpersonalisedmedicine,thecourtswillremainratherbusy.
TheMyriadcaseitselfisprobablynotoverCriticsmakethreemainargumentsagainstgenepatents:a
geneisaproductofnature,soitmaynotbepatented;genepatentssuppressinnovationratherthan

U.S.,lengthyperiodsofeconomicstagnationordeclinehavealmostalwaysleftsocietymoremean-spirited
