Alloftheseargumentswererejected,however,andthegeneralconsensuswasthatthequickestwaytoendthefightingwouldbetousenuclearweaponsagainstcantersofpopulationinsideJapan.Infact,twoofthemorelikelyreasonswhythisdecisionwasreachedseemquiteshockingtousnow.

SincethebeginningoftheSecondWorldWarbothGermanyandJapanhadadoptedapolicyofgenocide(i.e.killingasmanypeopleaspossible,includingcivilians).Lateron,eventheUSandBritainhadusedthestrategyoffirebombingcities(DresdenandTokyo,forexample)inordertokill,injureandintimidateasmanyciviliansaspossible.Certainly,thegeneralpublicintheWesthadbecomeusedtohearingaboutthedeathsoflargenumbersofpeople,sothedeathsofanotherfewthousandJapanese,whoweretheenemyinanycase,wouldnotseemparticularlyunacceptable—abitof"justifiable"revengefortheAllies'ownlosses,perhaps.

Earlierresearchbyfinancialeconomistsonbackdatingpracticesfocusedontheextenttowhichthecompany'sstockpricewentupabnormallyafterthegrantdate.MycolleaguesandIfocusedinsteadonhowagrant-date'spricerankedinthedistributionofstockpricesduringthemonthofthegrant.Studyingtheuniverseofabout19,000at-the-money,unscheduledgrantsawardedtopubliccompanies'CEOsduringthedecade1996-2022,wefoundaclearrelationbetweenthelikelihoodofaday'sbeingselectedasagrantdateforawardingoptions,andtherankoftheday'sstockpricewithinthepricedistributionofthemonth:adaywasmostlikelytobechosenifthestockpricewasatthelowestlevelofthemonth,secondmostlikelytobechosenifthepricewasatthesecond-lowestlevel,andsoforth.Thereisanespeciallylargeincidenceof"luckygrants"(definedasgrantsawardedondaysonwhichthestockpricewasatthelowestlevelofthemonth):12percentofallCEOoptiongrantswereluckygrants,whileonly4percentwereawardedatthehighestpriceofthemonth.

ThepassageoftheSarbanes-OxleyActinAugust2022requiredfirmstoreportgrantswithintwodaysofanyaward.Mostfirmscompliedwiththisrequirement,butmorethan20percentofgrantscontinuedtobereportedafteralongdelay.Thus,thelegislationcouldbeexpectedtoreducebutnoteliminatebackdating.ThepatternsofCEOluckareconsistentwiththisexpectation:thepercentageofgrantsthatwereluckywasahigh15percentbeforeenactmentofthelaw,anddeclinedtoalower,butstillabnormallyhigh,levelof8percentafterwards.

Thelate-nightbullsessionsincollegeoratbackyardbarbecuesareatsomelevellikeout-of-bodyexperiences,allowingare-coloringofpastexperiencetoconnectwithnewacquaintances.Amoreobviousoutlettoexpandidentity—andonethat'savailabletothosewhohavenotorcannotescapethefamilyandcommunitywherethey'reknownandlabeled—istheInternet.Admittedly,alotoftherole-playingontheInternetcanhaveadeviantquality.Butresearchershavefoundthatmanypeoplewhoplaylife-simulationgames,forexample,setupthekindoffamiliestheywouldliketohavehad,evenscript.alternateversionsoftheirownroleinthefamilyorinapeergroup.

DecadesagothepsychologistErikEricksonconceivedofmiddleageasastageoflifedefinedbyatensionbetweenstagnationandgenerativity—ahealthysenseofguidingandnourishingthenextgeneration,ofhelpingthecommunity.Inaseriesofstudies,theNorthwesternpsychologistDanP.McAdamshasfoundthatadultsintheir40sand50swhoselivesshowthisgenerousquality—whooftenvolunteer,whohaveasenseofaccomplishment—tellverysimilarstoriesabouthowtheycametobewhotheyare.WhethertheygrewupinruralpovertyorwithviewsofCentralPark,theytoldtheirlifestoriesasseriesofredemptivelessons.Whentheyfailedagrade,theyfoundawonderfultutor,andlatermadethehonorroll;whenfiredfromagoodjob,theywereforcedtostarttheirownbusiness.

Thissimilarityinnarrativeconstructionsmostlikelyreflectssomeagency,awillfulreshapingandre-imaginingofthepastthatinformsthepresent.Thesearepeoplewho,whetherpeggedasnerdsorrebelsorplodders,havetakencontrolofthestoriesthatform.theiridentities.

Inconversation,peopleareoftenwillingtohandoutthumbnaildescriptionsofthemselves:"I'mkindofahermit".Oratalker,apracticaljoker,astriver,asnob,amorningperson.Buttheyaremorelikelytowincewhensomeoneelsedescribesthemsoauthoritatively.
