、Artificial Beauty for Female College StudentsI. IntroductionChina has a famous proverb. Confucius, one of the greatest and most influential Chinese thinkers and social philosophers in ancient China, had a large amount of disciples which included one called Zaiyu and another called Ziyu. Since Zaiyu

、had an outstanding image and eloquence, Confucius had a very high opinion of him and thought he would make his way in the world. Inversely, Ziyu was so ugly that Confucius was indifferent to him; as a result, he had to drop out and studied by himself. However, things had gone beyond Confuciuss expec

、tations. Zaiyu was very lazy and achieved nothing although Confucius taught him seriously. On the contrary, through enduring efforts, Ziyu became a prominent scholar after all and was praised by a majority of people because his broad learning and elevated his character. After Confucius had heard tha

、r her external appearance, why do a large amount of female students want to undergo plastic surgery? In the past, people had to choose surgery to repair their scars or remove their moles because those are harmful to their images. But now, the majority of the defect-free patients undergo various cosm

、etic surgeries to perfect their external appearances. Besides the pursuit of beauty, the majority of these students undergo various operations in order to earn an ideal job. At the same time, the social phenomenon touches a controversy in all circles of society of whether cosmetic surgery is worthwh

、ile for female undergraduates. However, healthy young females shouldnt do such operations for the sole purpose of earning an ideal job because it is risky that the plastic surgery may bring serious diseases and some mental problems. Also, its unnecessary because the ability is the crucial factor for

、 a good job.II. The dangers of plastic surgeryWith the rapid development of cosmetic surgery in recent years, both the risks and expenditures have been lessening whereby the pursuit of beauty is no longer a dream for common people. For this reason, more female university students try to improve thei

、r images through cosmetic surgery. A survey showed that, “In the United States, within the last decade, permanent alteration of the body for aesthetic reasons has become increasingly common. By 1988, 2 million Americans, 87% of them female, had undergone cosmetic surgery, a figure that had tripled i

、n two years.” (Eugenia, 1993) Granted, as a female university student, I found that more and more students around me have undergone a variety of plastic surgeries, for instance, double eyelid surgery, nose reshaping, and liposuction; however, not everyone was satisfied with effect which even made th

、em look worse. In addition, the risk of cosmetic surgery cannot be neglected because of the failure rate in fact. According to statistics made by Kirsten, the death rate from liposuction was in 5,000, a rate nearly 20 times higher than that of other forms of elective cosmetic surgery. (Kirsten, 2004

、) This scary number is enough to arouse people who begin to prepare or are ready to take the operation to give up by reason that no one wants to be a victim. To some extent, some unsuccessful operations can be repaired by subsequent remedies, but the actuality is not as optimistic as peoples imagina

、tion. Many people think plastic surgery can be mortified again and again until the patients have satisfied, which is so naive that the majority of the aftermath are difficult to remedy in fact. For this reason, plastic surgery is not what people think of that can be taken by anyone anytime or anywhe

、re. Moreover, for healthy college female students who have no severe defects on their face or shape, it is not sensible that they run the risk of taking plastic surgeries. III. Counterargument: reasons to undergo cosmetic surgeryHowever, the question remains, why do female students prefer to run the

、 risk to undergo cosmetic surgery? The reason is simple: many university students believe that good external appearances benefit them tremendously in terms of job opportunity. During recent years, the phenomenon of severe gender discrimination which narrows the coverage of jobs for females is still

、difficult to solve. Even though some companies are willing to employ females, they put forward certain steep demands to females, such as sufficient height and good appearance. For this reason, it seems that a good external appearance is such essential to get a good job. Of course, there is no doubt

、that a good external appearance can bring a good first impression. In the research of Homeliness is in the disgust sensitivity of the beholder, they examined the correlations between disgust sensitivity and attractiveness ratings assigned to attractive and unattractive target individuals. They found

、 that, “disgust-dependent attractiveness perceptions may motivate avoidance of potentially unfit interaction partners” (Justin, Florian & Ian, 2012). For this reason, should female college students undergo plastic surgery in order to get jobs? It looks like a bit far-fetched. For example, if the

、 two candidates who stand in front of the employer have the similar educational backgrounds and equivalent personal abilities, the employer maybe hire the applier with better external image. IV. The crucial factor is abilitiesTo illustrate the above example, if the less attractive person has a more

、convincing diploma, more comprehensive capacity, or more useful skills, the result should be turned over. The reason is that good external appearance indeed can bring extra points but cannot make up for the lack of personal ability, after all, the personal ability is the crucial factor for doing a g

、ood job. Through in-depth study, Pascale, and so on, examined “the interaction between appearance, competence, and job sex type, and it showed that attractiveness influenced recruiters for female, but not for male sex-typed jobs, when the applicant was highly competent.” (Pascale, Sabine & V

、3;ronique, 2009) That is, the crucial factor of getting a good and high-paid job is the candidates actual ability as well as the match of jobs instead of the good appearances. Every job requires corresponding skilled talent, so the necessity for interview is to find the right employee. Even if an at

、tractive face brings job opportunity, but such job opportunity is temporary in my view. Owing to long-term practice the real personal ability could be revealed without reservation. As a result, whoever gets a job depends on his or her external appearance but lack of real capacity, and then he or she

、 might be fired in the future. In that case, good appearances may bring not only good first expressions but also negative influences. Furthermore, according to the causal attributions for womens career success, “beauty sometimes become an important factor which leads to negative evaluation by others

、because people incline to attribute their success to their beautiful faces rather than personal ability” (Heilman and Stopeck, 1985). Therefore, to some extent, external attractiveness can result in disadvantageous judgment which is not necessarily helpful to employment. A lot of college students ju

However, many people with ordinary and even worse appearances can also get a foothold in their professions and become the outstanding performers in their

(Reeves Kevin) Although she is only a figure in TV series, there is no lack of prototype in real life. Besides Betty, Napoleon Bonaparte is also a good e

、xample. As we know, Napoleon was a very short man with a height of just 56. Yet he is regarded as one of the most illustrious military leaders and statesmen of all time. As a result, we can find that real successful people are not necessarily with extraordinary appearances, but they must have positi

、ve mind and outstanding ability.V. Impacts on mental healthBesides the influence on appearance, plastic surgery also has an impact on peoples mental health. Many people consider that extraordinary external appearances can improve the self-confidence when college students attend interviews and even i

、n future endeavors. Granted, a good external appearance could bring self-confidence, which is the reason why people with good looks have more self-confidence than others. However, there is a significant difference between real beauty and artificial beauty. Not every patient can improve their self-co

Generally, some college students expect too much of cosmetic surgery which can change their life fundamentally,

、but it could bring about abnormal psychological bias. It is an example that things will develop in the opposite direction when they become an extreme. Because of the lack of self-confidence, the majority of these students are unable to accept and recognize themselves psychologically, so they want to

、 perfect their external appearance through plastic surgery to hide their inner inferiority, which could leads that they neglect to foster their own ability and ever worse. In addition, both successful and unsuccessful surgery may bring some psychological problems. On the one hand, parts of people wh

On the other hand, the patients or their family who cannot accept their new appearance also can bring certain mental illness. For this reason, some people even lose the original self-confidence after un

、dergo the plastic surgery because they cannot accept their new faces. In general, not everyone would benefit from the plastic surgery in terms of increasing self-confidence.VI. ConclusionAll in all, for health female college students, plastic surgery is not the wise choice in order to earn ideal job

、s. For starters, the dangers of plastic surgery have not been lessened that can be neglected. Moreover, Good external appearance is not the crucial factor for catching a job in the long run. Then, again not everyone can enhance self-confidence after undergoing plastic surgery, and even parts of them

、 get some psychological problems. Everyone loves beauty because beautiful faces indeed can be treated as one magic weapon of attracting others. Nevertheless, the heart is the most important medium of interpersonal communication. The person who prefers external appearance rather than inner training w

As contemporary female college students, we should not make an attempt to achieve success depends on good external appearanc
