1、Unit 5Eating OutIt would be interesting to know what Americans eat at home, but the information probably would not tell us very much. The population of the country is so varied and there are such different traditions in different parts of the world that we would probably find in the country a mixtur
2、e of diets found everywhere else in the world. Where U.S. eating habits have changed, however, and where they have become very similar, is in what happens when people go outside their homes to eat. A recent survey tells us a lot about the restaurant eating habits of Americans.The people of the Unite
3、d States eat out often. In an average month, 98 percent of U.S. families eat at least one meal in some kind of restaurant, and most families eat out over nine times a week. Although not all of the meals they eat our are regular meals- breakfast, lunch, or dinner- that means that people eat over one-
4、third of their meals in restaurants. Can you guess which meal they eat out most often? Not surprisingly, it is lunch. The following list shows how often different meals are eaten in a restaurant:Lunch 38%Dinner 30%Snacks 20%Breakfast 12%Where Americans eat is a second interesting question. A real sy
5、mbol of modern life in the United States is the fast-food restaurant- that is, a restaurant where there is usually no service at the table; where you pick up your food yourself, sometimes in a car from an outside window; and where the food is often already prepared before you get there. The most pop
6、ular kind of fast food is the hamburger, and the most popular type of restaurant is the fast-food hamburger restaurant.A third question is why Americans go out to eat. The answers to this question depend on what kind of restaurant they choose. The fast-food restaurant seems to have replaced a lot of
7、 home meals, and people eat at them for convenience. Most Americans say that they eat out in fast-food restaurant in order to avoid having to cook. Another reason is that they can eat quickly. Although there are still a lot of full-service restaurants people go to them mostly to celebrate special oc
8、casions, such as birthdays and anniversaries, and simply to relax. The relaxing experience makes full-service restaurants very different from fast-food restaurants, where eating fast food is just that-fast.The United States is certainly a restaurant society, but we may ask whether the restaurants ar
9、e actually that good or whether eating in them is healthy. They must be good because they are very popular, but a look at the food that people order shows that fried foods and soft drinks are their greatest preference. Since we know that too much fat and sugar is not healthy, it appears that America

18、est London, from 1 to 5 August, for the “Great British Beer Festival ”, when more than 300 traditional British beers, also called “real ales”, will be poured into thousands of pint glasses. But be careful, one visit might not be enough! According to Stephen Cox, one of the organizers, “Real ales nee
19、d to be tasted on different days to be appreciated. The quality, the color, and even taste of the beer can change from day to day. They are a bit like race horses: performance on the day is crucial.”For two days, during the last weekend of August, Notting Hill becomes the scene of one of Londons mos

Good people with a dream should have the opportunity to make that dream come true.”I took the checks to Merril Lynch the first time I had ever entered a broker
45、age house where the money was invested for me. I continued working at the Buttercup, making plans for the restaurant I would open. My investments soured though, and I lost the money.I found myself thinking about what it would be like to be a stockbroker. After great deliberation I decided to apply f
46、or a job at Merril Lynch. Even though I had no experience, I was hired and ended up becoming a pretty good broker. Eventually I paid back Fred and my customers the $50 000, Plus 14-percent annual interest. Five years later, I was able to open my own firm.I got a thank-you note from Fred, which will be imprinted on my heart forever.
