Shes smiling broadly, looking for all the world like Carrie in Sex and the City , even though shes not in New York but in London, England. “When I see something I like, I have to buy it,” she says, “I

17、sm? Most people like to go shopping sometimes, but its not good when someone loves shopping so much that they go into debt or worse, bankrupt. And the signs are shoes which have never been worn or clothes which are still wrapped.5Psychologists see shopaholism as an addiction which can benefit from t
18、reatment. The symptoms include behaviour which is adapted to avoid reality, a loss of control, an illusion of freedom, or a combination of all three. And of course, temptation is everywhere. If you dont have time to go to the mall, there are many other ways to shop till you drop, such as home shoppi
19、ng on the television, mail order catalogues and buying online.6 And the result? Financial problems, shame and regret.7 Research suggests that shopaholism is a globalproblem, claiming that 90 per cent of shopaholicsare women. Its estimated that in all, 10 per cent ofall women around the world are aff
20、ected, each with average debts of 8,000. It usually begins in their early 20s when they have their first job and are earning money for the first time, and gradually over the next few years, the debts accumulate. Men can also be addicted to shopping, not for clothes but for cars, tools and electronic
21、 goods. 8So why do we love shopping so much? One reason is that shopping appears to be attractive and exciting. Its estimated that the fashion-conscious Victoria Beckham spends 100,000 yearly on shopping. Sarah Jessica Parker, the actress who plays Carrie in Sex and the City, admits to owning about
22、100 pairs of Manolo Blahnik shoes, each pair costing somewhere between $300 and $1,000. So-called WAGs (wives and girlfriends of footballers) became famous during the 2006 World Cup in Germany when six of them spent 57,000 on clothes and shoes in just one hour.9Another reason is that many 18- to 24
23、year-olds shop to reduce stress. Sometimes lonely, anxious, angry or lacking in love, a typical shopaholic comforts herself with shopping excursions, proving to the world that “Shes worth it.” A further factor is the ease of obtaining credit today. Before the 1970s everyone used cash to buy everythi
24、ng, and women couldnt even borrow money on their own. But today its the norm to have a credit card, and its acceptable to be in debt. Whats more, using a credit card doesnt feel like spending real money. 10So what can you do if you think youre a shopaholic? First, you need to admit you have a proble
25、m. Look for reasons why you like shopping so much. Are you shopping because something else is missing in your life? Are your relationships in need of attention? Is your marriage in a bad way? Did your parents value material goods more than emotions? Then you need to find some other activity which gi
26、ves you pleasure. And finally, when you have to go shopping, make a list of what you need and dont buy anything else. Pay with cash and destroy all your credit cards, except one for emergencies which you should give to a friend to look after for you. 11Linda, Kate and Carina are not exceptions. They
27、re like many women all over the world, all with stories which have a happy beginning but end in despair.
