摘要 作为尤利西斯序曲和英雄斯蒂芬的改进版的一个年轻艺术家 的肖像，其独特的自然主义表现不能遭受忽视。或许自然主义被认为过于 简单可以不需要任何解释，然而，不同的作家或批评家对自然主义有自己不 同的解释或表达。深受以易卜生，福楼拜，霍普特曼为代表自然主义派的影 响的乔伊斯也是如此，这就有必要探讨乔伊斯是如何提炼前人经验，并把它 以自己的方式融入到自己的作品中。 本论文旨在对肖像文本细致的分析的基础上，探究他如何以现代主 义的方式来表现自然主义。 首先，围绕肖像一文，对前人的批评研究成果的做一个总括的综述， 综述主要从主题，语言，技巧方面分类。关于自然主义，因为不同的作家有 不同的阐释，所以需要做一简短的介绍，以便对其对乔伊斯的影响有一个了 解。 第二，根据p i z e r 的自然主义小说的定义，基于文本，分析两种张力， 探讨主题意义上的自然主义特征。主题方面，乔伊斯选择一个平凡的主人公 与命运抗争，主人公尽力去克服他的生理冲动，寻求他的艺术使命。但作者 却是以一种讽刺，但有带有人文精神的笔触来叙述的。 第三，在词语与句子两个层面，进行文体的考察，看乔伊斯如何运用语 言达到自然主义的文学效果。词语选择方面，乔伊斯想展现一副主人公史蒂 芬所生活的肮脏的环境情景；造句运用方面，乔伊斯力图根据史蒂芬不同的 年龄阶段使用适合的语言，也达到自然主义所追求的客观性。 第四，洞察自然主义与象征主义关系在肖像中的发展状况，乔伊斯 尝试以一种辩证的方式来处理自然主义与象征主义的关系，文章开始是自然 主义细节蕴涵象征主义，中间是象征主义对抗自然主义，最后是象征主义强 加自然主义。 最后，根据上述的分析研究，乔伊斯成功地以现代主义的方式来表现自 然主义，那就是以人文的，讽刺的笔触，追求客观的精神，与象征主义辩证
