as 1174.2920081 as 1774.292008australian standardrefractories and refractory materialsphysical test methodsmethod 29: cast coverageprefacethis standard was prepared by the standards australia committee mn-007, refractories and refractory materials, to supersede as 1774.291995. it provides a satisfactory procedure for determining the cast coverage from castable refractory materials.the objective of this standard is to provide those preparing test pieces from refractory materials with a uniform procedure for determining cast coverage, which is a parameter required to be known so that test pieces can be prepared by the standard methods, and so that users of castables can accurately determine the amount of dry material required to yield a given volume of a refractory concrete.the objective of this revision is to simplify the procedure.method1 scopethis standard describes a procedure for the determination of the cast coverage of castable refractory materials.2 referenced documentsthe following documents are referred to in this standard: as1774refractories and refractory materialsphysical test methods1774.4.1method 4.1: preparation of test piecesby casting2243safety in laboratories (series)2497procedures for acceptance testing of refractory products2497.1part 1: batch procedure2780refractories and refractory materialsglossary of .auas 1774.2920083 definitionsfor the purpose of this standard, the definitions in as 2780 apply.4 principlecastable refractory samples are mixed with a specified amount of water or until a specified consistency is achieved. a sample of known mass and volume is prepared from which cast coverage is determined by calculation.5 safetyfor information on safety in laboratories, reference should be made to the relevant parts ofas 2243 and the relevant safety data sheet for the material under test.6 apparatus6.1 mouldsconstructed of, or coated with, a material that is inert to the test sample, and with a known volume not less than 1 l.6.2 weighing devicea balance capable of weighing the required mass to the nearest gram.7 samplingsamples for preparation of test pieces should be taken in accordance with established sampling principles.note: guidance on sampling procedures may be found in as 2497.1.8 procedurethe following procedure shall be used:(a) weigh the mould and record the mass (m1), to the nearest gram.(b) prepare a sufficient quantity of castable in accordance with as 1774.4.1. (c)cast in accordance with as 1774.4.1.(d) immediately weigh the mould and contents and record the mass (m2) to the nearest gram.9 calculationsthe cast coverage is calculated from the following equation:cc = (m2 m1 ) 100(100 + w) vwherecc=the cast coverage, in kilograms per cubic metrem1=weight of the empty mould, in kilogramsm2=weight of the mould and mixed castable, in kilogramsw=percentage of water added on a dry weight basisv=volume of the mould, in cubic metres standards a.au3 as 1774.29200810 test reportthe test report shall include the following information:(a) a description of the as-received material and of any treatment prior to testing. (b)the cast coverage, to the nearest 10 kilograms per cubic metre.(c) water added as percent of dry material, to the nearest 0.1%.(d) where applicable, consistency as a flow value to the nearest 1%. (e)reference to this australian standard, i.e. as 1774.29.11 precisionsuitable data for inclusion as precision data is not available. future editions may include repeatability and reproducibility data.as 1774.292008this australian standard was prepared by committee mn-007, refractories and refractory materials. it was approved on behalf of thecouncil of standards australia on 18 january 2008 and published on 30 june 2008.the following are represented on committee mn-007:australian ceramic societyaustralasian institute of mining and metallurgybureau of steel manufacturers of australiacsiro, manufacturing and infrastructure technologycement industry federation limitedinstitute of refractories engineersrefractories manufacturers association of australiauniversity of new south waleskeeping standards up-to-datestandards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and systems. to maintain their currency, all standards are periodically reviewed, and new editions are published. between editions, amendments may be issued. standards may also be withdrawn. it is important that readers assure themselves they are using a current standard, which should include any amendments which may have been published since the standard was purchased.detailed information about standards can be found by visiting the standards web shop at .au and looking up the relevant standard in the on-line catalogue.alternatively, the printed catalogue provides information current at 1 january each year, and the monthly magazine, the global standard, has a full listing of revisions and amendments published each month.we also welcome suggestions for the improvement in our standards, and especially encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or ambiguities. contact us via email at .au, or write to the chief executive, standards australia limited, gpo box 476, sydney, nsw 2001.originated as as 1774.291995. second edition 2008.this standard was issued in draft form for comment as dr 08064.copyright standards australiaall rights are reserved. no part of this work may be reproduced or copied i
