They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way. Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and fun in work. Some teenagers work in the forests or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and to build houses. The adults teach them these skills. There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn phototaking or drawing. Others sit around and talk or sing. Each teenager chooses his own way to pass his free time. When people live together, they should have rules. In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?” One of the teenagers has said something about it, “You have to stop thinking only about yourself. You learn how to think about the group.”(Text 10)If someone offered to pay all my expenses for a months holiday anywhere in the world, I would feel very surprised and very excited. I think I would decide to fly around the world and to visit three different countries. The countries I would visit would be Australia, the United States of America and Kenya. If I went to Australia, I would stay there for about two weeks. Before I went, I would write to one of my Australian friends. I would suggest that if it were possible, he should spend a week with me visiting Aboriginal tribes in the northern part of Australia. My friend could explain what we saw and he could translate what people said because he majored in Aboriginal Studies at Queensland University. If I went to the United States, I would stay there for about a week. I expect I would start by visiting New York. I have heard that New York is a very exciting city. After I had stayed for two or three days in New York, I would fly to San Francisco. I hope I could stay with my friends who live there and I would visit the city and other parts of California. Finally, I would fly to Kenya where I would stay for about a week. There are three things I would like to do in Kenya. First, I hope I could visit the coast. Next, I would like to visit a game reserve. I imagine the wild animals of Africa the lion, elephant and hippopotamus are very exciting and beautiful. Finally, I would like to visit the Mountains of Kenya where you can see snow on the Equator. If someone offered me this money, I would be amazed. Unfortunately, I do not think this will ever happen and I doubt if I shall ever visit these countries. AVolunteer vacation in IndiaTeach and care for orphan childrenYoure needed now more than ever as a volunteer in India. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal (肠的) disorder, neither Al nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.Knowing the death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his sixyearold younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. In time, Al became an alcoholic. As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Als death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment. I knew Als now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, and most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and love had to come from somewhere.I hadnt heard Ernie talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, Love you, son.”Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But he had been a kind and loving father, and left behind his best love. 24What directly made the author think of Al as a failure?AHis losing everything and his life.BHis older sons death.CHis strong addiction to alcohol.DHis wifes divorcing him. 根据第三段中的“As the alcoholism progressed, Al began to lose everything he possessed his land . in a small bar.”及“What a totally . a complete failure!” 25What can we infer from Als son, Ernie?AHis fathers life was indeed wasted.BThe love from his father made him what he was.CA great fortune must have been left to him.DHe was not very kind but very loving. 根据第五段中的“I worked up my courage . such a special person.”和“Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, Love you, son.” 26Which of the following changed the writers earlier judgment?AAl was indeed very wealthy and left behind lots of material possessions.BAls son, Ernie, grew into a kind, loving and caring person.CAl had been totally devoted to educating his son, Ernie.DAl was not only responsible for his son but also for his own success. 根据第四段中的“As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment.”及“He is one of the . come from somewhere.” 27What might be the best title of the article?ALove you, sonBA failure fatherCParents love DA skilled artist解析:选A标题归纳题。 CWe all know that exercise is good for your health, but some kinds of exercise may be better than others.Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running also may help you live longer. Researchers say it is not important how far you run. It also does not matter how fast or even how often you run. As advertisements for the running shoe Nike say, “Just do it.”Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About onefourth of the adults reported running regularly. The study found these runners were considerably less likely than nonrunners to die of any form of disease, including heart disease. In fact, the runners usually lived three years longer than the nonrunners. This study lasted 15 years. During that time, more than 3,400 of the individuals died. About 1,200 of the deaths were linked to heart disease, a heart attack or a stroke. Compared to nonrunners, runners showed 30 percent lower risk of death by any causes. Also, runners compared to nonrunners showed 45 percent lower risk of death by cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. The runners in the study ran between 10 and 16 kilometers per hour. Slower runners, and those who only ran once or twice a week, were helped nearly as much as those who ran faster and further. Researchers looked at the running over time and found that persistent runners over six years showed the biggest benefits. To stay healthy, doctors suggest that adults up to age 65 do 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) exercise every week. They say these individuals need 75 minutes of energetic exercise, like running, every week for good health. 因此,你若想长寿,就跑步吧!28For running, the most important is that you should_.Ado it at a certain timeBkeep it and never give it upCmake it an everyday activityDdo it for a certain distance at a time解析:选B细节理解题。 29What have the researchers discovered?AHow fast and how often one runs matter a lot.BOver onethird of nonrunners will die of heart disease.CRunners are less likely to die of disease than nonrunners.DOne should run more often to benefit most from running. 30According to the text, how should a 63yearold man go running?ATry to run as long as he can.BBe sure to run slowly and safely.CKeep running at least 30 minutes a day.DRun 5 times a week and 15 minutes every time. 31What is the best title for the text?AHow to be a wise runnerBFor a longer life, go runningCA study on science of movementDRelations between running and health解析:选B标题归纳题。 DWhat do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias (自助食堂), and libraries have in common? Thats the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently. The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should “spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed (牺牲) for learning. A strong body makes the mind strong.”It turns out Jefferson_was_on_to_something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised
