It has been the Gateway to Africa for business and trade for millennia. Somalias unique geographic location makes it a dynamic meeting place where East meets West and North meet into South,.,6,Somalia is bordered by Djibouti to the northwest, Kenya to the southwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Ethiopia to the west.,.,7,The Country has the longest coastline on the mainland of Africa, with a seaboard that stretches 3,325 km. Its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains and highlands.,.,8,The nation has a total area of 637,657 square kilometres (246,201 sq. mi) of which constitutes land, with 10,320 square kilometres (3,980 sq. mi) of water.,.,9,The country was divided into four regions:Northern Somalia with an arid climate and little vegetation, Central Somalia, equally arid and with a nomadic population, Central-southern Somalia, which had the most developed agricultural and animal husbandry sectors and Southern Somalia or Lower Juba with thick vegetation and very rich fauna.,The total population of Somalia is about 12 millions,.,10,After more than two decades of civil conflict, Somalia is currently at a “turning point” in terms of positive political and security developments.Somalia has entered a new phase of peace-building, stability and recovery, after the end of the political transition on 08 February 2017. The outlook is more positive than it has been in a generation.,.,11,There has never been a better time to invest in the Somalias agriculture, fisheries sectors, real state and Natural Resource. Geographic location and its youthful population, Somalia could offer an export platform for these sectors, potentially creating immense wealth and food security for hundreds of millions of people.,Area of investment opportunities,.,12,Fishery Sector,With 3 325 km of coastline facing the Indian Ocean, Somalia has the longest coastline in continental Africa and yet despite this it remains the countrys most untapped and undervalued resource.The Somali marine ecosystem is rich in a diversity of living resources.,.,13,Large schools of primarily tuna migrate from north to south and back along the east coast of Africa. The Somali Coastal Current Large Marine Ecosystem (LME), along the Somali east coast, is ranked fourth in the world in fishery production potential (FPP). Out of 54 ranked Large Marine Ecosystem (LMEsLikewise, the Arabian Sea Large Marine Ecosystem (LME), along the Somali north coast, is ranked eighth in the world,.,14,Economically Important Fishes Found in Somali Waters,The pelagic fishes that inhabit Somali waters can be divided into two groups:Small pelagic including sardines, herring, and anchovies,b) Large pelagic including tuna species, billfishes, mackerel, and dolphin fish.,.,15,Economically Important Fishes Found in Somali Waters,.,16,The lobster sector is one of Somalias oldest fisheries and was one of the first marine exports out of Somalia to the Middle East.Commercially important species include the rock lobster and the deep-sea spiny lobster.In the Gulf of Aden, the main species are the painted spiny lobster and the pronghorn spiny lobster,.,17,Shrimp and prawns also are subject to high exploitation in Somali waters. There is a year-round fishery targeting prawns at the mouth of the Juba River in southern Somalia near Kismayo. Cephalopods (squid and cuttlefish) are also caught in significant numbers.,.,18,.,19,The Potential for Investment in Somali Fisheries,The Somalia fishing industry will require investor assistance.,There is potential for Somalis to earn millions of dollars each year from licensing foreign fishing vessels, and this revenue could be used to expand the fisheries sector.,Somalias small-scale fisheries sector would benefit greatly from investment in infrastructure and services.,.,20,Ice-making plants. At present there are no such plants in Somalia.Cold-storage services. These are required to store excess catch for better marketing opportunities. Boat-building yards. All shing boats are built from local wood by using very simple tools. Better designed and larger boats will be required in the future to sh in deeper waters and to take trips of more than one day.Plants to make shing nets. One of the major constraints to increasing catch is the acute shortage of shing gear.,.,21,Agriculture Sector,.,22,Agriculture Sector,Somalias agriculture sector is the main driver of the countrys economy. Agriculture is a major component particularly for two of the main rural livelihood systems.Agro-pastoralist, mix of agriculture and livestock production based livelihood Agriculturalist, agriculture based livelihood.,.,23,In terms of land mass; just 1.6% of Somalias total land area is cultivated, and 69% is permanent pasture.,.,24,According to FAO; there are four primary agricultural zones in Somalia: Northwest in parts of Awdal and North West rain fed maize and sorghum with some livestock herdings Coastal Cowpea Belt Zone in Central and Southern Somalia Shabelle and Juba Riverine Valleys - rainfed and irrigated maize, with sesame cash cropsSorghum Belt in Bay and Bakool Region - rain fed sorghum with livestock production.,.,25,The two main agricultural seasons are: Gu crop production, from April to June and Deyr crop production is from October to December. Shabeelle and Jubba rivers also are grown Corn, sorghum, beans, rice, vegetables, cotton, and sesame.,.,26,Why Investing Agriculture in Somalia,Somalia agricultural potential begins with over 8.9 million hectares of arable land available for farming. This land offers significant opportunities in animal husbandry and in a variety of crops. With ample water and sunlight and a location in the Horn of Africa, Somalia is well positioned to meet increasing demand in local, regional, and global markets.,.,27,Somali possesses abundant alluvial soil, ample water resources and sufficient sunlight to permit two or more harvests per year. The Country is suitable for a large range of agricultural products, including cotton, gum acacia, millet, sorghum, sesame, rice and peanuts, maize, sugar cane, and tobacco. There is also great potential for high-value tropical fruits such as bananas, grapefruits, guavas, mangoes, lemons, oranges, pineapples, and many others.,.,28,Investment in agriculture fields is welcomed in the following: 1. Wheat cultivation 2. Sorghum (Dura) 3. Oil seeds (sesame, groundnut, and sunflower).4. Fruits (mango, banana, juava, lemon, strawberry, pineapple (Ananans), grapefruit. 5. Vegetable (tomato, greenbeans, akra, cucumber, potatoes, onion, garlic, spices, legumes, lentils). 6.
