theneuronstofiremorereadilythantheyoth-erwisewould.Formanyyears,caffeine's

effectshavebeenattributedtoitsinhibitionoftheproductionofphosphodiesterase,an

enzymethatbreaksdownthechemicalcalledcyclicAMP.Anumberof

neurotransmittersexerttheireffectsbyfirstincreasingcyclicAMPconcentrationsin

targetneurons.Therefore,prolongedperiodsattheelevatedconcentrations,asmightbe

broughtaboutbyaphosphodiesteraseinhibitor,couldleadtoagreateramountofneuron

firingand,consequently,tobehavioralstimulation.ButSnyderetalpointoutthatthe

caf-feineconcentrationsneededtoinhibittheproductionofphosphodiesteraseinthe

brainaremuchhigherthanthosethatproducestimulation.Moreover,othercompounds

thatblockphosphodi-esterase'sactivityarenotstimulants.Tobuttresstheircasethat

caffeineactsinsteadbypreventingadenosinebinding,Snyderetalcomparedthe

stimulatoryeffectsofaseriesofcaffeinederivativeswiththeirabilitytodislodge
