TheworIdartmarkethadaIreadybeenlosingmomentumforav/hiIeafter

risingbewiIderinglysince.Atitspeakinitwasworthsome$65biIIion,

reckonsClareMcAndrew,founderofArtsEconomics,aresearchfirm—doubIethe

figurefiveyearsearIier.Sincethenitmayhavecomedownto$50billion.But

themarketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbringstogether

greatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedby

fewotherindustries.

IntheweeksandmonthsthatfolIowedMrHirst'ssaIe,spendingofany

sortbecamedeepIyunfashionable,especiallyinNev/York,wherethebail-outof

thebankscoincidedwiththelossofthousandsofjobsandthefinancialdemise
