Thehungrybearfollowedhisnosetoourcamp,whichwassurroundedbya

highwirefence.Hepulledandbitthewire.Hestoodonhisbacklegsand

pushedatthewoodenfenceposts.

Terrified,ElliandItriedallthebeardefenseactionsweknew.Weyelledat

thebear,hitpotshard,andfiredblankshotgunshellsintotheair.

Sometimesloudnoiseslikethesewillscarebearsoff.Notthispolarbear

though—hejustkepttryingtoteardownthefencewithhismassivepaws

Iradioedthecampmanagerforhelp.Hetoldmeahelicopterwasonitsway,
