perpersonasmostothermajorcountries.Whathappenstothistrash?Somegetsrecycled(回4攵

利用)orrecoveredandsonicisburned,butthemajorityisburiedinlandfills.

HowMuchTrashIsGenerated?

Ofthe210milliontonsoftrash,orsolidwaste,generatedintheUnitedStatesannually,about56

milliontons,or27percent,iseitherrecycled(glass,paperproducts,plastic,metals)orcomposted

(做成堆肥)(yardwaste).Theremainingtrash,whichismostlyunrecyclable,isdiscarded.

HowIsTrashDisposedof?ThetrashproductionintheUnitedStaleshasalmosttripledsince

1960.Thistrashishandledinvariousways.About27percentofthetrashisrecycledor

composted,16percentisburnedand57percentisburiedinlandfills.Theamountoftrashburied

inlandfillshasdoubledsince1960.TheUnitedStatesrankssomewhereinthemiddleofthemajor

countries(UnitedKingdom.Canada,Germany,FranceandJapan)inlandfilldisposal.TheUnited

Kingdomrankshighest,buryingabout90percentofitssolidwasteinlandfills.

WhatIsaLandfill?

Therearetwowaystoburytrash:

•Dump-anopenholeintliegroundwheretrashisburiedandthatisfullofvariousanimals(rats,

mice,birds).(Thisismostpeople'sideaofalandfill!)

•Landfill-carefullydesignedstructurebuiltintoorontopofthegroundinwhichtrashisisolated

fromthesurroundingenvironment(groundwater,air,rain).Thisisolationisaccomplishedwitha

bottomlineranddailycoveringofsoil.

oSanitarylandfill-landfillthatusesaclaylinertoisolatethe(rashfromtheenvironment

oMunicipalsolidwaste(MSW)landfill-landfillthatusesasynthetic(plastic)linertoisolatethe

trashfromtheenvironment.

Thepurposeofalandfillistoburythetrashinsuchawaythatitwillbeisolatedfrom

groundwater,willbekeptdryandwillnotbeincontactwithair.Undertheseconditions,trashwill

notdecompose(腐烂)much.Alandfillisnotlikeacompostpile,wherethepurposeistobury

trashinsuchawaythati(willdecomposequickly.

ProposingtheLandfill

Foralandfilltobebuilt,theoperatorshavetomakesurethattheyfollowcertainsteps.Inmost

partsoftheworld,thereareregulationsthatgovernwherealandfillcanbeplacedandhowitcan

operate.Thewholeprocessbeginswithsomeoneproposingthelandfill.

IntheUnitedStates,takingcareoftrashandbuildinglandfillsarclocalgovernment

responsibilities.Beforeacityorotherauthoritycanbuildalandfill,anenvironmentalimpact

studymustbedoneon(heproposedsitetodetermine:

•theareaoflandnecessaryforthelandfill

•thecompositionoftheunderlyingsoilandbedrock

•theflowofsurfacewateroverthesite

•theimpactoftheproposedlandfillonthelocalenvironmentandwildlife

•thehistoricalvalueoftheproposedsite

BuildingtheLandfill

Oncetheenvironmentalimpactstudyiscomplete,thepermitsaregrantedandthefundshave

beenraised,thenconstructionbegins.First,accessroadstothelandfillsitemustbebuiltiftheydo

notalreadyexist.Theseroadswillbeusedbyconstructionequipment,sanitation(环卫)services

andthegeneralpublic.Afterroadshavebeenbuilt,diggingcanbegin.IntheNorthWakeCounty

Landfill,thelandfillbegan10feetbelowtheroadsurface.

WhatHappenstoTrashinaLandfill?

Trashputinalandfillwillstaythereforaverylongtime.Insidealandfill,thereislittleoxygen

andlittlemoisture.Undertheseconditions,trashdoesnotbreakdownveryrapidly.Infact,when

oldlandfillshavebeenduguporsampled,40-ycar-oldnewspapersliavcbeenfoundwitheasily

readableprint.Landfillsarcnotdesignedtobreakdowntrash,merelytoburyit.Whenalandfill

closes,thesite,especiallythegroundwater,mustbemonitoredandmaintainedforupto30years!

HowIsaLandfillOperated?

Alandfill,suchastheNorthWakeCountyLandfill,mustbeopenandavailableeveryday.

Customersaretypicallymunicipalitiesandconstructioncompanies,althoughresidentsmayalso

use(helandfill.

Neartheentranceofthelandfillisarecyclingcenterwhereresidentscandropoffrecyclable

materials(aluminumcans,glassbottles,newspapersandpaperproducts).Thishelpstoreducethe

amountofmaterialinthelandfill.Someofthesematerialsarebannedfromlandfillsbylaw

becausetheycanberecycled.

Ascustomersenterthesite,theirtrucksareweighedatthescalehouse.Customersarecharged

lippingfeesforusing(hesite.Thetippingfeesvaryfrom$10to$40perton.Thesefeesareused

topayforoperationcosts.TheNorthWakeCountyLandfillhasanoperatingbudgetof

approximatelyS4.5million,andpartofthatconiesfromtippingfees.

Alongthesite,therearedrop-offstationsformaterialsthatarenotwantedorlegallybannedby

thelandfill.Amulti-materialdrop-offstationisusedfortires,motoroil,lead-acidbatteries.Some

ofthesematerialscanberecycled.

Inaddition,thereisahouseholdhazardouswastedrop-offstationforchemicals(paints,

pesticides,otherchemicals)thatarebannedfrom(helandfill.Thesechemicalsaredisposedofby

privatecompanies.Somepaintscanberecycledandsomeorganicchemicalscanbeburnedin

furnacesorpowerplants.

Otherstructuresalongsidethelandfillaretheborrowedareathatsuppliesthesoilforthelandfill,

therunoffcollectionpondandmethane(甲烷)station.

Landfillsarecomplicatedstructuresthat,whenproperlydesignedandmanaged,servean

importantpurpose.Inthefuture,newtechnologiescalledbicreactorswillbeusedtospeedthe

breakdownoftrashinlandfillsandproducemoremethane.
