AMedicalPioneerAttheNobelPrizeLectureon7December,2015,an84-year-oldChinesewomanwalkedslowlyontothestage.Shebegantotalkaboutthelife-savingdrug,artemisinin,whichshehaddiscoveredwiththehelpofherteaminthe1970s.ThewomanwasTuYouyou,thefirstChinesefemalescientisttobeawardedaNobelPrizeforherwork.AscientistwhowasontheNobelPrizeCommitteecalledHansForssbergexplainedthat“thediscoveryofartemisininhasledtothedevelopmentofnewdrugswhichhavesavedthelivesofmillions”.WhenthankingtheCommitteeforthehonour,TuYouyousaid,“Thisisnotonlyanhonourformyself,butalsorecognitionandencouragementforallscientistsinChina.”TuYouyouwasborninZhejiangProvince,China,on30December,1930.ShestudiedmedicineatPekingUniversityHealthScienceCentre.Aftergraduation,shebecameamemberofChinaAcademyofChineseMedicalSciences.Later,shestudiedChinesemedicinefortwoandahalfyearswithexpertsinthefieldfromwhomshegainedadeepknowledgeabouttraditionalpractices.In1969,TuYouyouwaschosentoestablishateamtofindacureformalaria—adiseasethatkilledmillionsofpeopleeveryyear.Acrosstheworld,scientistshadbeentryingtofindacure.Theytestedmorethan240,000chemicalswithnosuccess.However,TuYouyouhadanideathatChineseherbsmightholdthesecret.ShestudiedancientChinesemedicalliteratureandvisitedexpertsintraditionalChinesemedicine.Sheresearchedhundredsoftraditionalrecipesconnectedtoanti-malarialcures.ThenTuYouyouandherteambeganusingmodernresearchmethodstostudytheseChineseherbsonebyone.Thiswasnotaneasytask.Thereasonwhythiswasdifficultwasthattheteamhadlimitedresources.Theydidnothaveenoughstaff,andthelaboratoryinwhichtheyworkedhadpoorairquality.However,afterhundredsoffailedexperiments,theyeventuallycameacrossapromisingchemical.Itworkedwellinexperimentsonanimals,buttheyhadtoknowifitwassafeforhumans.TuYouyoubravelyvolunteeredtobethefirsthumansubjectwhentheywerereadytostarttestingandtherestofherteamfollowedher.Thetestwasasuccess.Themedicinetheydiscovered,artemisinin,hasnowbecometheworld’smosteffectivedrugforfightingmalaria.EventhoughTuYouyouisnotinterestedinfame,shehasbecomeascientistwhoseworkisinternationallyrenowned.In2019,shewasselectedbytheBBCasoneofthemostinfluentialfiguresofscienceinthe20thCenturyalongwithAlbertEinsteinandAlanMathisonTuring.TuYouyouwasnotedforherbraveryinbeingascientistduringadifficulttimeforscienceinChina,herabilitytouseoldwisdomandnewmethodstoachievehergoalsandthefactthatherworkbridgedtheEasternandWesternworlds,savingmillionsoflives.TodayTuYouyoucontinuestoconductresearchdespiteherage.AccordingtoTuYouyou,“Fromourresearchexperienceindiscoveringartemisinin,welearntthewisdombehindbothChineseandWesternmedicine.Thereisgreatpotentialforfutureadvancesifthesetwokindsofwisdomcanbefullyintegrated,”shesaid.
