Scientistshavealreadydesignedspecialspacefactories.Thesefactories

willtakeadvantageoftheabsenceofgravity(zerogravity)toproduce

Otherscientistshavedesignedspacecolonies,completewithfarms,schools,

Theconquestofspace,withoutquestion,isoneofthegreatestadventures

humanbeingshaveeversetouton.Butitmaybemorethanagreatadventure.

Somescientiststhinktheconquestofspacemaybeanecessityforsurvivalof

thehumanspecies.

WearetearingupmoreandmoreoftheEarthtogetrawmaterialsfor

industry.Andwearepollutingtheairandwateraswemanufactureproducts

thatweneedorwant.Almosteverythingthatseemstomakeourlivesmore

comfortable,andfromelectricitytopesticides,usesuporaltersapieceof

ourplanet'snaturalenvironment.

WhyGointoSpace?

Yetoursolarsystemisfullofresources.Themoonischockfullof

valuablemetals.Soaretheasteroids,thesmall,rocky,planet-likebodies

orbitingthesunmostofthembetweenMarsandJupiter.Thesemetals,ifwecan

getthem,couldbeusedtobuildfactoriesandspacestations.

Also,inspcice,thereisnoatmospheretofilteroutthesun'senergy.

Thereisplentyofsolarenergytobeturnedintoelectricityformanufacturing,

forcreatingcomfortablelivingconditions.

GettingawayfromEarthhasotheradvantages,too.Modernindustryuses

manykindsofmetalalloys(mixturesofmetalthatarebetterforcertain

purposesthanpuremetals).Yetsomemetalalloyseithercan*tbemadeorare

veryexpensivetomakeonEarthbecauseofgravity.Forinstance,certain

metalsdon'tmixwellonEarth.Butinzerogravity,molten(hot,liquid)

metalsmixmoreevenly.Thisisbecausethereisnogravitytopulltheheavier

metalsdown,whilethelighteronesfloatontop.

fromthedangersofultravioletlightandcosmicrays.Ultravioletlightfrom

thesuncangiveusbadsunburnsrighthereonEarth.Yet,Earth'satmosphere

screensoutmostofthatharmfulradiation.Cosmicraysaretinyhighenergy

particlesfromouterspace.Again,theEarthshieldsusfrommostofthem.

AtHomeinSpace?

Butinspace,withoutspecialprotection,wewouldbeexposedtomuch

strongerradiationfronultravioletlightandcosmicrays.Also,inthezero

gravityofouterspace.ourboneswilllosecalciumandbecomeweaker.This

willbemoreofaproblemthelongerpeoplestayoutinspace.Doctorsare

lookingforawaytokeepourbonesfromlosingcalciuminouterspace.Anda

smallspaceshipjustmight“driveyoubatty“afterawhile.Butevenona

shorttripinouterspace,youmightnotfeelaswellasyou'dliketo.Space
