Twofriendswerewalkingintheforest.Oneistall,

finewhitedress,inawindow,andletherselfbestaredat;
shehadneitheratrainnoragoldencrown,butsplendid
redmoroccoshoes.Theywerecertainlyfarhandsomer
thanthoseDameShoemakerhadmadeforlittleKaren.
Nothingintheworldcanbecomparedwithredshoes.
NowKarenwasoldenoughtobeconfirmed;shehad
newclothesandwastohavenewshoesalso.Therich
shoemakerinthecitytookthemeasureofherlittlefoot.

thoughtofherredshoes.
Intheafternoon,theoldladyheardfromeveryonethat
theshoeshadbeenred,andshesaidthatitwasvery
wrongofKaren,thatitwasnotatallbecoming,andthat
infutureKarenshouldonlygoinblackshoesto
church,evenwhensheshouldbeolder.
ThenextSundaytherewasthesacrament,andKaren
lookedattheblackshoes,lookedatthered
ones—lookedatthemagain,andputontheredshoes.
Thesunshonegloriously;Karenandtheoldladywalked
alongthepaththroughthecorn;itwasratherdusty
there.
Atthechurchdoorstoodanoldsoldierwithacrutch,
andwithawonderfullylongbeard,whichwasmorered
thanwhite,andhebowedtotheground,andaskedthe
oldladywhetherhemightdusthershoes.AndKaren
stretchedoutherlittlefoot.
"See,whatbeautifuldancingshoes!"saidthes
