Foundedin1892,ZhanqiaoLandingStagewitnessedthehistoryof

Qingdaocity.In1891,theQingGovernmentsentZhangGaoyuanto

garrisoninQingdaovillage.Theybuiltfortsandcampshereand

madeQingdaoanimportanttown.Inthesecondyear,forthepurpose

ofseatransportation,theybuilta200-meterlongirondockwith

stonefoundationinthesouthcoast.Thatwasthepredecessorof

theLandingStage.Andin1894,ministerLiHongzhangreportedthis

totheQingGovernment.Sincethen,ithasbeenthesymbolof

Qingdao.

OnNov.14,1897,GermantroopslandedfromQingdaoandoccupied

thecity.ThisbridgewasawitnessofGermansinvasion.In1900,

itwasdestroyedbyatyphoonandwasrebuiltaslongas350meters

longbytheGermans.Itbecameasight-seeingspotafterDagangPort

wasbuiltin1905.

FromSeptember1931toApril1934,ZhanqiaoLandingStagewas

againreconstructedbytheGuomindanggovernment.Itwasprolonged

to440meters,withreinforcedconcretepiersandpavedroad.On

thesouthendofthebridge,asemi-roundembankmentwasconstructed,

andontheembankment,theybuiltatwo-storypavilionin

monumenttothewestofthepavilionwasleftbyHuZanzong,governor

ofShandongduringtheQingDynasty.Onthenorthbankoftheeast

poolatwatersideistherenownedPenglaiTeaHouse,whichwas

visitedrespectivelybyEmperorKangxiandQianlong,whosathere

bythewindowandenjoyedthecolorfulcharmsofthespringsover

acupoffragranttea.AtthepleasingtasteofwaterfromBaotuquan

springs,theyeventhrewoutthewatertheybroughtallthewaywith

themfromBeijingontheirinspectiontothesouth.Itissaidthat

waterfromspringsfurtherreinforcesthetasteofgoodteaandthat

onewouldnotbevisitingarealJinanwithoutdrinkingthespring

water.

OnthenorthbankofBaotuquanspringsisagroupofancient

buildings,usuallyreferredtoasthreepalaces.Thefrontonewith

twostoriesandthreehallsiscalledLuoyuanHall,andwasbuilt

duringNorthTheSongDynasty.Thebuildingisnotedforits

extendingeavesandpatinaflavor.Onthecolumnsarecarvedfamous

linesbyZhaomengfu,awriteroftheYuanDynasty.Theyread:〃云

lifelike,formingaharmoniouspicturewiththerealpresentwater

worldinview.TheothertwopalacesarenamedrespectivelyasJiange

TempleandEyingTemple,whichwerebuiltinhonorofthetwo

imperialconcubinesofEmperorShun.Onthewallssurroundingthe

palacesareinlaidoverthirtystoneinscriptions,onwhichare

poemsandverseswrittenbycelebritiesofdifferentdynasties.What

isworthmentioningisthetwinimperialmonuments,onwhichrecord

epigraphsandpoemsbyEmperorKangxiwhovisitedherethreetimes

andbyQianlongwhowasheretwice.Themonumentswellillustrate

theeminenceofBaotuquansprings.

TothesouthofBaotuquanspringsistheWhiteSnowBuildingat

Shiwanquanspring.ItwassetupinmemoryofLiPanlong,awriter

andscholarofTheQingDynasty.Itwasburntdowninafireand

wasrebuiltin1996togetherwithanoperastage.Hereperennial

operasandplaysareperformed,makingitaperformancecenterwell

knownnotonlyinChinabutalsointheworld.SoutheastofBaotuquan

springsisacourtyardcalledCangyuanGarden,whereitissaidthat

LiPanlongwasstudying.Thethreehallsandtwocourtsinthegarden

areallconnectedbytwistingopencorridors.Therearerareflowers,

oddtrees,greenpinetreesandqueerrockeriesinthegarden.In

1987,amemorialwassetuphereforWangXuetao,afamousmodern

painterofflowersandbirds.MorethantwohundredpiecesofChinese

paintingarehereonexhibitionallyearround.

OutofCangyuanGarden,acrosstheFengxiIslandbridge,comes

inviewapoolofclearspringwatergushingfromundergroundlike

amirror.Thisisoneofthe72wellknownspringscalledShuyuquan

spring.Shadywillowsaround,limpidwaterdowntothevisible

bottom,gurglingwateragainstrocksasifwashingthejade,the

jade-likepoolliesinharmoniouscharmwithLiuxuspring,Huanghua

spring,andPaniuspring.BythesideofLiuxuspringandwestof

Shuyuspringaretwostone-laidpondsrespectivelycalledOldGold

ThreadspringandColdThreadspring.Inthem,waterveinsarecaused
