specializedbodyofwisdom,orpossiblyboth.Unfortunately,neitheristrue.Notmuchworth

readingaboutmanagingtheentrepreneurialorsmallbusinesseshasbeenwritten,andthe

leadersofsuchbusinessesaremadeoffleshandblood,liketherestofus.

Furthermore,littlehasbeendonetoaddresstheaspectsofentrepreneurialorsmallbusinesses

thataresodifficulttodealwithandsodifferentfromthechallengesfacedbymanagementinbig

businesses.Inpartthisisbecausethoseinvolvedingatheringexpertiseaboutbusinessesandin

sellingadvicetobusinesseshavehistoricallybeenmoreinterestedintheneedsofbigbusiness.In

part,intheUKatleast,itisalsobecausesmallbusinesseshavealwayspreferredtoadaptto

changingcircumstances.

Theorganizationalproblemsofentrepreneurialorsmallbusinessesarethusforceduponthe

individualswholeadthem.Evenmoresothanforbiggerbusinesses,theoldsayingistrue-that

people,particularlythosewhomaketheimportantdecisions,arebusiness'mostimportantasset.

Theresearchthatdoesexistshowsthatneithermoneynortheabilitytoaccessmoreofitisthe

majorfactordetermininggrowth.Themainreasonanentrepreneurialbusinessstopsgrowingis

thelackofmanagementandleadershipresourceavailabletothebusinesswhenitmatters.Give

anentrepreneuranexperienced,skilledteamandheorshewillfindthefundseverytime.

Gettingtheteam,though,isthedifficultbit.Partoftheproblemforentrepreneursisthespeed

ofchangethataffectstheirbusinesses.Theyhavetocopewithcontinuouschangeyethave

alwaysbeensuspiciousaboutthelatestmanagementsolution.Theyregardthemanyofferings

frombusinessschoolsasoutofdateevenbeforetheyleavetheplanningboardandhavelittle

faithintherecommendationsofconsultantswhentheyarriveinthehandsofyoung,

inexperiencedgraduates.Butsuchimpatiencewithmanagementsolutionsdoesnotmeanthat

problemscanbelefttosolvethemselves.However,theleadersofgrowingbusinessesarestillleft

withtheproblemofwhototurntoforadvice.

Theanswerishorriblysimple:leadersofsmallbusinessescanaskeachother.Thecollective

knowledgeofagroupofleaderscanprovetobeenormouslyhelpfulinsolvingthespecific

problemsofindividuals.Oneleader'sproblemshavecertainlybeensolvedalreadybysomeone

else.ThereisanorganizationcalledKITEwhichenablesthoseresponsibleforsmallbusinessesto

meet.Itsmembers,allofwhomarechiefexecutives,gothroughademandingselectionprocess,

andthenjoinasmallgroupofotherchiefexecutives.Theycomefromarangeofbusinesssectors

andeachoffersadifferentcorporatehistory.Eachgroupisledbyamoderator;anindependently
