Tosolvetheknowledgeproblem,theresearchersused“deepneuralnetworks”—two13-layer-deepnetworksthatconsistofmillionsofconnectionsandtrainedthemwithtwomethods:Foronenetwork,theyshowedthecomputermorethan30millionmovesfromgamesplayedbyhumanexpertstohelpthesystemlearnhowthebestplayerswin;andforboth,theresearchershadthecomputerplaythousandsofgameswithitselftodiscovernewstrategiesandlearnthegameonitsown.Thesetwotrainingstrategiesallowedthecomputertorecognizepatternsinthegameandidentifywhatmovesgaveitthebestchanceofwinning. Forthesearchproblem,theresearchersexploitedtheMonteCarloTreeSearchTechnique,whichallowsthesystemtousestatisticstodeterminethebestmove,ratherthanplayouteverypossibleoutcome.ThesearchtechniqueusedbytheDeepMindteamisnotnew.WhatmakesDeepMind’sAlphaGosoadvancedisthewaytheyputtogetherallthetools,alongwiththehighperformanceofthedeepneuralnetworks.“Themainnoveltyisinhowthey’vecombinedthesedifferentingredientstogether—they’veinnovatedindoingthat,”saysYoshua,acomputerscientist.
