counterparts,wereamateurhistorians.Theirwritingswerecelebratoryinnature,and
theywereuncriticalintheirselectionanduseofsources.Duringthenineteenth
century,however,certainfeministsshowedakeensenseofhistorybykeepingrecords
ofactivitiesinwhichwomenwereengaged.National,regional,andlocalwomen's
organizationscompiledaccountsoftheirdoings.Personalcorrespondence,newspaper
clippings,andsouvenirsweresavedandstored.Thesesourcesfromthecoreofthe
twogreatestcollectionsofwomen'shistoryintheUnitedStatesoneattheElizabeth
andArthurSchlesingerLibraryatRadcliffeCollege,andtheothertheSophiaSmith
CollectionatSmithCollege.Suchsourceshaveprovidedvaluablematerialsforlater
generationsofhistorians.
Despitethegatheringofmoreinformationaboutordinarywomenduringthe

women"theoryofhistory,justasmuchofmainstreamAmericanhistoryconcentrated
