onerswerenoisy,theywouldbebeaten.Example3:-Hey,fish!Comeoverhere!......Freshfishtoday!We’rereelingthemin!嘿,菜鸟,你过来!⋯⋯菜鸟来了!我们又有的玩了!ThisiswhattheoldprisonerofShawshankPrisonsaidwhenhesawAndygotojailwithotherprisoners.Theykeptbooingandbettingonwhowouldbethefirstpersontocollapsethatnight.Ifthetranslatortranslates“fish,freshfish”directlyinto“鱼,新鲜的鱼”,theaudiencewillfeelverypuzzled.Therefore,thestrategyoffreetranslationisneeded.“Freshfish”isacolloquialisminEnglish,meaning“青年囚犯”.ThisisaculturalphenomenonuniquetoEnglish-speakingcountries.Thestrategyoffreetranslationcanmakethetargetlanguageachievethesameexpressioneffectasthesourcelanguage.Thetranslationof“菜鸟”hereisnatural,andtheaudiencecanunderstandsitwell.Example4:-Justgivethatchance.我绝不迟疑ThissentenceisthedialoguebetweenthewardenandTommy.ThewardenwassuspiciousofwhetherAndywaswronged,sohetestedTommy.However,TommyfirmlyexpressedhiswillingnesstotestifyforAndy.Ifthissentenceistranslatedinto“请给我这样的机会”,Tommy’sdeterminationtocleanupAndy’sgrievancesatthattimewouldnotbewellexpressed.Sothetranslatortookintoaccountthedeterminedtoneofthecharacterinaspecificsituationandusedthestrategyoffreetranslationtotranslateitas“neverhesitate”,whicharousedtheemotionalresonanceoftheaudience.4.3OmissionAccordingtothetheoryoffunctionalequivalence,translatorsshouldchoosewordswithsimilarfunctionstoreplacetheoriginaltextandavoidreproducingtheformoftheoriginaltextinordertoreproducetheinformationoftheoriginaltext.Therefore,wecanconcludethattranslatorsgenerallychoosetoomitlanguageunitsthatareblunt,dispensable,orawkwardinthetranslationprocess,anddeletelengthylanguages.Althoughthistranslationmethoddoesnotseemtobesimilar,thesamemeaningdoesnotaffecttheaudience'soverallgraspofthefilm.TherearemanyexamplesinthesubtitlestranslationofTheShawshankRedemption:Example1:-Youshitwhenyousayyoushit,andpisswhenwesayyoupiss.叫你去厕所你就去厕所。AfterthewardenNortonhadspokentothenewprisoner,heaskedtheprisoneranyquestions.Oneoftheprisonersasked“Whenshallweeat?”.WardenHadleywalkeduptothenewprisonerandpunchedhimseverely.Thenhesaidviciously“Youshitwhenyousayyoushit,andpisswhenwesayyoupiss”.Afewshortsentencesmadetheaudienceunderstandthedarknessoftheprison.InShawshankprison,prisonershavenofreedomandrights.Fromthissentence,itisnotdifficultforustounderstandwhyafterRhettwasreleasedfromprison,healwayshadtoreporttothebosswhenhewasgoingtothetoilet.Intheoriginalsentence,ifitisdirectlytranslated,itshouldbetranslatedas“我们叫你拉你就拉,叫你尿你就尿”.ForChineseaudiences,“去厕所”means“shit”and“piss”.Therefore,thetranslatordidnottranslateallthecontentoftheoriginaltext,butusedthestrategyofomissiontomergethetwosentences.Thistranslationmethodismoreinlinewiththecharacteristicsofsubtitles.Example2:-Thattalldrinkofwaterwiththesilverspoonuphisass.那个高个子。ThissentenceisanimagedescriptionoftheprotagonistAndy.Theoriginaltextisnotdifficulttounderstand:“屁股上挂着用银勺喝水的高个子”.Thissentencestickstothelanguageform,andthetranslationisverycomplete.However,Chineseaudienceswillfinditunnecessarywhenwatchingit.Soitcanbedirectlytranslatedas“那个高个子”.Example3:-AndyDufresne:Itwasverybitter.Shesaidshewasglad.Iknewthatshehatedallthesneakingaround.ShesaidshewantedadivorceinReno.真的很令人伤心。她说她很高兴我已知道,她受够了偷偷摸摸。她说她想要离婚。Inthissentence,thetranslationdeletes"Reno"."Reno"isacityintheUnitedStatesandhasthetitleof"DivorceCapitaloftheWorld."A"no-responsibilitydivorce"ispracticedhere,thatis,aslongasyouliveforaspecifiedtimeandpayacertainfee,youcangetadivorce.Therefore,thousandsofAmericansflockedhereforasmoothdivorce.ThissentencetakesintoaccountthedifferencesintheculturalbackgroundsofChineseandAmericanaudiences,andadoptsareductionmethodtoavoidcomprehensionobstaclestothetargetlanguageaudience.4.4AmplificationTheamplificationtranslationstrategycanmakethetranslationfaithfullyexpressthemeaningandstyleoftheoriginaltext.Somewordsmustbeaddedrhetoricallyorsyntacticallywhenusingamplificationstrategies.Insomecases,agoodtranslationhasmorecontentthantheoriginaltext.DuetotheculturaldifferencesbetweenChinaandtheWest,somewordsthatonlyappearintheculturalbackgroundofthesourcelanguagedonotexistinthetargetlanguagebackground,whichwillleadtoadeviationintheaudience’sunderstandingofthefilm.Therefore,inordertoexpresstheimplicitmeaningoftheoriginaltextduringtranslation,thetranslatorneedstoaddcertaininformationsothattheaudiencecanfullyunderstandthefilm.InTheShawshankRedemptionsubtitlestranslation,thetranslatorusedadditionaltranslationstrategiesforsomedialoguesthatwouldmisunderstandChineseaudiences.Example1:-WhenI’mback,thisisallgone,right?回来时,不想见到这些书。安迪,听到了吗?AndyspentsixyearswritingtotheStateHouserequestingfundingforthelibraryexpansionplan.Intheend,theStateHousesenthim$200anddonatedoldbooksandsomesundries.Oldbooksandsundriespileduptheflooroftheprisonoffice.Inthistranslation,thetranslatoradoptsanamplificationtranslationstrategytotranslates“this”into“书”insteadof“这”tohelptheaudienceunderstandwhattheword“this”refersto.Example2:-It’sBrooks.布鲁克斯出事了。Brooks’parolepassed.Haywoodwenttosaygoodbyetohim.Butsurprisingly,Brookswasnothappybecausetheparolepassed.Onthecontrary,hewassosadthathewasholdingaknifetocutHeywood’sneck.Atthattime,oneoftheinmatesrantotellRhettandAndytosay“It’sBrooks”.Therearenoverbsintheoriginaltext.Ifitisdirectlytranslatedas“使布鲁克斯”,thenthissentencewillnotconveyanymeaningtotheChineseaudience.Therefore,inthetranslation,thetranslatortranslatedthissentenceas“布鲁克斯出事了”andaddedtheverb“出事了”sothattheaudiencewouldbeclearlyandhaveanunderstandingoftheplot.Example3:-Itwasverybitter.Shesaidshewasglad.Iknew,thatshehatedallthesneakingaround.AndshesaidthatshewantedadivorceinReno.那天我们吵得很凶,她说她很开心我已经知道了,她已经厌恶了躲躲藏藏的日子。她说她想去离婚城市“里诺”离婚。ThisiswhatAndysaidwhenhewasaskedtodescribewhathappenedonthenightofthemurder.Whentranslating“Itwasverybitter”,thetranslatoraddedthetimeadverb“那天”tothecontent,sothatitcorrespondstotheabovewhenansweringthejudge,whichmakestheexpressionmoreclear.Inaddition,whentranslatingthesentence“AndshesaidthatshewantedadivorceinReno”,thetranslatoralsoadded“离婚城市”toexplainthecityofReno.ThiskindoftranslationallowstheaudiencetounderstandwhytheyhavetogotoRenoforadivorce,sothattheycanmoreaccuratelygrasptheplot.Bothofthesetwoplacesadoptedthemethodofamplificationtranslationstrategy,whichmoreaccuratelyconveyedthecontentofthefilm.Example4:-Soin1949whenAndy.DufresnecametomeandaskedmetosmuggleRitaHayworthintotheprisonforhim,Itoldhimnoproblem.所以1949年安迪找我要丽塔·海华丝海报,我对他说,“包在我身上”。Inthissentence,manyviewersarepuzzledbythename“RitaHayworth”.Infact,heisanAmericanfilmactorbornin1928andfavoredbymanyAmericanaudiences.Untiltoday,noneofhisfilmandtelevisionworkshavebeenshowninChina.ManyChineseaudiencesdon'tknowmuchaboutAmericanactorsintheUnitedStatesinthemid-20thcentury.However,itisdifficultforChineseaudiencestounderstandthatpeopleshouldbesmuggledoutintheoriginaltext.Sothetranslatoradded“海报”tothere,sothatthedomesticaudience’sconfusionaboutthisplacewaseliminated.ConclusionDuetotheculturaldifferencesbetweenChinaandtheWest,somewordsthatonlyappearintheculturalbackgroundofthesourcelanguagedonotexistinthetargetlanguagebackground,whichwillleadtoadeviationintheaudience’sunderstandingofthefilm.Afilmmayreflectallasp
