Introduction
Inrecentyears,thePWP(Pre-reading,While-reading,andPost-reading)teachingmodelhasgainedsignificantattentioninthefieldofEnglishLanguageTeaching(ELT).ThisarticleaimstopresentacomprehensivePWPteachingdesignforEnglishreadingclasses,focusingonenhancingstudents'readingskillsandcomprehensionabilities.
Pre-readingStage
Thepre-readingstageaimstoactivatestudents'priorknowledgeandbuildanticipationforthereadingtext.Itincludesthefollowingcomponents:
1.Warm-upactivity:Beginthelessonwithabriefdiscussion,questions,orarelevantvideocliptoengagestudentsandintroducethetopic.Forexample,forareadingtextaboutglobalwarming,showashortvideoaboutitsimpactontheenvironment.
2.Pre-teachrelevantvocabulary:Introducekeyvocabularywordsthatmayappearinthereadingtext.Usevarioustechniquessuchasvisualaids,gestures,andcontextcluestohelpstudentsunderstandandrememberthewords.
While-readingStage
Thewhile-readingstagefocusesondevelopingstudents'readingcomprehensionskillsandstrategies.Itinvolvesthefollowingsteps:
1.Skimming:Encouragestudentstoquicklyreadthroughthetexttogetageneralunderstandingofthemainidea,topicsentences,andstructure.Thishelpsincreatingafoundationfordetailedcomprehensionlater.
2.Scanning:Askstudentstoscanthetextforspecificinformationoranswerstogivenquestions.Thisactivityimprovestheirabilitytolocateandextractrelevantinformationfromthetextefficiently.
3.Comprehensionquestions:Provideasetofcomprehensionquestionsalignedwiththereadingtext.Thishelpsstudentsdelvedeeperintothecontent,analyzethetext,andinfermeaningfromcontext.
4.Readingstrategies:Introduceandpracticedifferentreadingstrategiessuchaspredicting,summarizing,andinferring.Thesestrategiesempowerstudentstoactivelyengagewiththetextandenhancetheiroverallreadingcomprehensionskills.
Post-readingStage
Thepost-readingstageaimstoconsolidatestudents'understandingofthetextandencouragefurtherreflectionandapplicationofknowledge.Itinvolvesthefollowingcomponents:
1.Discussionandinterpretation:Initiateaclassdiscussiontoencouragestudentstosharetheirthoughts,interpretations,andopinionsaboutthereadingtext.Thispromotescriticalthinkingandimprovesoralcommunicationskills.
2.Extensionactivities:Assignfollow-upactivitiessuchaswritingasummary,creatingapresentation,orconductingfurtherresearchrelatedtothetopic.Theseactivitiesallowstudentstodeepentheirunderstandingofthetextanddeveloptheirlanguageskills.
3.Feedbackandassessment:Provideconstructivefeedbackonstudents'performanceinreadingtasksandactivities.Assesstheircomprehension,vocabularyusage,andabilitytoapplyreadingstrategieseffectively.
