THEHONOURSOFMORTALITY

Thebrillianttalentwhichhasquitelatelyandquitesuddenly-

arisen,todevoteitselftotheuseofthedayoroftheweek,in

illustratedpapers-theenormousproductionofartinblackand

white-isassuredlyaconfessionthattheHonoursofMortalityare

worthworkingfor.Fiftyyearsago,menworkedforthehonoursof

immortality;thesewerethecommonplaceoftheirambition;they

declinedtoattendtothebeautyofthingsofusethatweredestined

tobebrokenandwornout,andtheylookedforwardtosurviving

themselvesbypaintingbadpictures;sothatwhattodowiththeir

badpicturesinadditiontoourownhasbecometheproblemofthe

nationandofthehouseholderalike.To-daymenhavebegantolearn

thattheirsonswillbegratefultothemforfewbequests.Art

wind,again,hasastyle,andthatwindameremanner.Nay,there

whetherheeverpainted,inhislatermanneratleast,anyothers.

Hisskiesarethusintheactofflight,withlowercloudsoutrunning

thehigher,thefarthervapoursmovinglikeafleetoutatsea,and

thenearerlikedolphins.Inhis,'ClassicalLandscape:Italy,〃the

too,nonetheless,areconquerors.They,too,arealwaysstrong,

compellingwindsthattakepossessionofthelight,theshadow,the

sun,moon,andstars,andconstrainthemallaliketofeelthesea.

Notafield,notahillside,onasea-windday,butshineswithsome

softsea-lights.Themoonslittleboattossesonasea-windnight.

Thesouth-westwindtakesthehighItaliancoasts.Hegathersthe

ilexwoodstogetherandthrongsthemclose,asasheep-doggathers

thesheep.Theycrowdforshelter,andagreatwall,leaninginland

also,withitsstrongbasetothesea,receivesthem.Itisblank

andsunny,andthetreeswithinaresunnyanddark,serried,and

theirtopssweptandflattenedbymonthsofsea-storms.Onthe

farthersidetherearegardens-gardensthathaveintheirmidst

thosequietestthingsinalltheworldandmostwindless,box-hedges

andponds.Thegardenstakeshelterbehindthescaredandhurried

ilexwoods,andthesea-windsparesthemandbreaksuponthemountain.

Butthegardenalsoishis,andhiswildwarmdayshavefilledit

withorange-treesandroses,andhavegivenalltheabundantcharm

toitsgayneglect,toitsgrass-grownterraces,andtoallits

lapsed,forsaken,andforgottendainties.

NothingofthenatureinthisseawardItalywouldbesobeautiful

withoutthetouchofmanandoftheseagales.

Whenthesouth-westwindbringshisrainhebringsitwiththe

majesticonsetannouncedbyhisbreath.Andwhenthelightfollows,
