flyingcontest,andthirdoverall.Intime,shesetanationalairspeed

record.SheflewfromNewYorktoMiamiinfourhours,12minutes,and

27seconds-over204milesanhour!

CochransoughttohelpAmericantroopsduringWorldWarII.She

believedthat,ifmorewomenlearnedtofly,theycouldtaketheplacesof

malepilotswhowereneededtofightinthewar.Shepresentedherideato

theU.S.government,andgovernmentofficialsaskedhertoleadthe

Women'sairForceServicePilots,morecommonlycalledtheWASP.

OveronethousandWASPflewplanesoverseas,wheretheseplanescould

beusedinthewar.Theytestednewplanesandsupportedthemilitaryby

carryingsupplies.Cochranbecamethefirstwomanwhohadnotbeen

enlistedintheservicetobeawardedtheU.S.DistinguishedService

Medal.
