-PAGE2-ofNUMPAGES262014-2015学年第一学期商务英语翻译练习1.Germany'srecoverygrindstoahaltEconomicrecoveryintheeurozoneloststeamintheclosingmonthsoflastyearasGermany’supturngroundtoahalt,inablowtothecountry’snewGovernmentunderAngelaMerkel,theChancellor.AnabruptslowdowninEurope’sbiggesteconomysawGermany’sgrowthstagnateinthefinalquarterof2005,afterarobustexpansionof0.6percentinthepreviousthreemonths,officialfiguresshowed.ThedisappointingsuddenstandstillinGermanycontributedtoahalvinginfourth-quarterGDPgrowthacrosstheeurozonetoamodestpaceofonly0.3percent.However,despitethebadnewseconomists,investorsandeurozonepoliticiansallexpressedconfidencethatbothGermanyandtheeurozonewouldstillenjoyarenewedaccelerationintheopeningmonthsofthisyear.Asurveyof25,000Germancompaniesbythecountry’schamberofindustryandcommerce(DIHK)reportedthattheoutlookforcorporateinvestmentwasatitsstrongestfor11years,whileexpectationsforexportssurgedtoasix-yearhigh.Themoodamongservicesfirmsalsobrightened,withcompanies’spiritsbuoyedbyexpectationofaboostforconsumerspendingfromthisyear’sWorldCup.InafurthercountertothegloomyGDPdata,theclosely-watchedZEWsurveyofsentimentamongGermany’sinvestorsdippedonlyslightlyinFebruary,withaheadlineconfidenceindexof69.8—onlyalittlebelowthetwo-yearhighof70.0setinJanuary.TheZEWeconomicthink-tanksaidtheresultsshowedthatoptimisminGermanfinancialmarketshad“stabilizedatahighlevel”,whiletheinvestmentclimateremainedpositive.DavidBrown,aneconomistwithBearStearns,backedtheviewofmanyotheranalystsyesterdaythatmostoftheingredientsforastrongrevivalinGermaneconomicactivitythisyearremainedinplace.“Businessconfidenceisstilloperatingatahighlevel,consumeroptimismisbuildingasthejoblessratetrendslower,andrealactivitylevelsarecontinuingtopickup,”hesaid.Fornow,yesterday’sofficialfigurescontinuedtoshowscantsignofanyresurgenceinGermanconsumers’willingnesstospend.Thecountry’sstatisticsofficenotedthatdomesticdemandhad“contributedlittle”totheeconomy’sfourth-quartershowing.ItwasuncleartowhatextentconsumerspendingmayhavebeendepressedattheendoflastyearbypoliticaluncertaintiessurroundingthecreationofGermany’s“grandcoalition”GovernmentofleftandrightunderFrauMerkel.Inthemeantime,fourth-quartergrowthreliedinsteadonwhatwasdescribedas“highlydynamic”nettrade,andonstronginvestmentspending.Europeanfinanceministers,meetinginBrussels,soughttobrushasidethelacklustereconomicnewsandstrikeanoptimistictoneoverprospectsforthisyear.2.1WhatIHaveLivedForByBertrandRussellThreepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourse,overadeepoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasyecstasysogreatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestoflifeforafewhoursofthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelieveslonelinessthatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesoughtit,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhave,inamysticminiature,theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhatatlastIhavefound.WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofmen.Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine.AndIhavetriedtoapprehendthePythagoreanpowerbywhichnumberholdsswayabovetheflux.Alittleofthis,butnotmuchIhaveachieved.Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardtheheavens.Butalwayspitybroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpainreverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeopleahatedburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.Ilongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagainifthechancewereofferedme.2.2YouthSamuelUllmanYouthisnotatimeoflife;itisnotamatterofrosycheeks,redlipsandsuppleknees;itisamatterofthewill,aqualityoftheimagination,avigoroftheemotions;itisthefreshnessofthedeepspringsoflife.Youthmeansatemperamentalpredominanceofcourageovertimidity,oftheappetiteforadventureovertheloveofease.Thisoftenexistsinamanof60morethanaboyof20.Nobodygrowsoldmerelybyanumberofyears.Wegrowoldbydesertingourideals.Yearsmaywrinkletheskin,buttogiveupenthusiasmwrinklesthesoul.Worry,fear,self-distrustbowtheheartandturnthespiritbacktodust.Whether60or16,thereisineveryhumanbeing’sheartthelureofwonder,theunfailingchildlikeappetiteofwhat’snextandthejoyofthegameofliving.Inthecenterofyourheartandmyheartthereisawirelessstation:solongasitreceivesmessagesofbeauty,hope,cheer,courageandpowerfrommenandfromtheinfinite,youandIwillremainyoung.Whentheaerialsaredown,andyourspiritiscoveredwithsnowsofcynicismandtheiceofpessimism,thenyouaregrownold,evenat20,butaslongasyouraerialsareuptocatchwavesofoptimism,thereishopeyoumayhaveayoungheartat80.3.GeniusSacrificedforFailureDr.WilliamN.BrownDuringmyyouthinAmerica’sAppalachianmountains
