Fromthepublicreactiontothesedecisionsandotherslikethem,
itisveryclearthatthewayinwhichjuriesreachtheir
decisionsisoftenasimportanttotheAmericanpeopleasit
istothespecificpersonontrial.Manypeoplefeelthatthe
averagejuristisnotequippedtomakethekindsofdecisions
theyarefacedwith.Thesecritics'suggestionsrangefrom
restructuringthesystemuptotallyeliminatingit.
MostaverageAmericans,Ibelieve,feelthattherighttoajury
trialisafundamentalone,anditsguaranteesshouldbehonored.
Thesepeoplewouldarguethatlawsareinflexible.Theycannot
dealwiththeindividualcircumstancesineachcase,butjuries
cantaketheseintoaccount.Stillothersbelievethatjuries
arefavorablebecausetheyreflectthemoralsandvaluesofthe
communitytheycomefrom.Indeed,manyproponentsofthejury
supportthesystembecauseofaparticularkindofjurybias,
