AIandrobotshavelongbeenathemeinfiction.FromIsaacAsimov’s‘I,Robot’in1950toBaymax,thecarerobotin‘BigHero6’,we’velongbeenfascinatedwiththepossibilitiesformachinesthatcanunderstand,
reasonandlearn–andhelpustomakebetteruseofinformation.
Justimaginethatyouhadahand-heldscannerthesizeofyoursmartphonethatcould‘sense,computeandrecord’yourdailyhealthstatusjustlikethe
StarTrekmedical‘tricorder’.Whatifitcouldmakerecommendationssothatyoucouldachieveand
maintainyour‘optimal’physicalormentalconditionordetectanomaliesearly?
RobotslikeBaymaxandtricorderscannersarenot
sciencefiction.AIandrobotsthatsupport,diagnoseandtreatpeoplearealreadyinhomes,workplaces
andclinicalenvironmentsallovertheworld.And
howweembraceAIandroboticstocomplementandenhancecurrenthealthcareservicesoverthenext
tenyearswilldefineourabilitytodeliveramore
responsivehealthservicewithimprovedhealth
outcomes,whileatthesametimeenablingpeopletotakemorecontrolovertheirday-to-dayhealthneeds.

costissuesremainandourhealthsystemsarebecomingincreasinglyunsustainable.
Whatdoctor?
Attheheartofthisreportistheemergenceandincreasinguseofartificialintelligence(AI)androboticswithin
andthroughoutthisNewHealthecosystem.Wechose‘Whatdoctor’asourtitleforthereportbecauseduringourresearch–andtheresponsetothatresearch–ithasbecomeincreasinglyclearthatpolicymakers,payers,providers,educatorsandthepublicneedtoconsider:
•WhatistheroleoftheAI/robotdoctor?
•Whatistheroleofthehumandoctor?
Theanswerstothesetwoquestionsfundamentally
impactcliniciansandcaregiversthroughouthealthcare.Theanswerswillultimatelydecidehowweimplement
theuseofAIandrobotsindevelopingourhealthcare
systemsacrosstheglobe.Wewillspecificallyaddress
thesetwoquestionsinthenextphaseofourresearch
initiative,butitisimportanttokeeptheminmindasweexploreexistingperceptionsandattitudestowardsAIandroboticsinthisreport.

Fivedistincttrendsareconverging,whichmeanAIandroboticswillcometodefineNewHealth:
1.Firstandforemostisthevaluechallengethat
allcountriesacrosstheglobearefacing–thereis
escalatingdemandfromlong-term,chronicdisease,risingcosts,oftenwithanageingpopulationand
limitedresources(money,workforcespecialists,
etc).Yetwearecontinuingtoinvestinfacilitiesandequipmentthatwerebuilttosolveacompletely
differentsetofhealthcareneedsandarenotdesignedtocopewiththisdemand.Ahospital-centricsystemdealsverywellwithserioushealthepisodesthat
requiredaysorweeksofacutecareforveryillpeople.Butitwasneverintendedtodealwithlargenumbersofpeoplewhoseconditionsarechronic,complexandrequiretreatmentforthelongerterm.
2.Thepastdecadehasseenanexplosioninthe
amountofhealthdatathatisnowavailabletous.
Forexample,foraskinspecialistthereare11,000newdermatologyarticlespublishedeveryyear.In2013,it
wasestimatedthatthevolumeofhealth-relateddata
hadreachedoverfourzettabytes–that’sfourtrillion
gigabytes(1021)–andtherearethosewhoprojectthisexponentialgrowthratetoreachtentimesthatby2020,and,evenbeyond,toyottabyte(1024)proportions1.
Furthermore,fully80%ofthisextraordinaryamountofdataisunstructured2,meaningthatit’snotcontainedinadatabaseorsomeothertypeofdatastructure.Stayingcurrentwithandbeingabletoaccessthisdataissimplybeyondthescopeofanyhumanindividual,nomatterhowcapableorintelligent.
3.Informationtechnologydevelopmentinhealthcarehasbeen
rapidlymovingfromproductstoservicestosolutions(Frost&
Sullivan,2016).Pastdecadeshavefocusedontheinnovation
providedbymedicalproductsdeliveringhistoricandevidence-
basedcare.Thepresentdecadeisoneofmedicalplatforms
focusedonreal-time,outcome-basedcare.Thenextdecadeis
movingtowardsmedicalsolutions–usingAI,robotics,andvirtualandaugmentedreality–todeliverintelligentsolutionsforboth
evidence-andoutcome-basedhealthandfocusingoncollaborative,preventativecare.Thisconfluenceoftechnology-basedproducts,
platformsandsolutionsisleadingtoapreviouslyunimagined
precisionmedicine,downtothefamilialandindividuallevel,whichonedaymayevenbeabletopredictandtherebypreventdisease.

alreadyembeddedinAndroidoriOS.Harnessingthis
technologyisprovidingconsumerswiththedataand
informationtheyneedtoproactivelymanagetheirownhealthandwellness,andtomakebetter,moreinformeddecisionsinpartnershipwiththeirhealthcareproviders.

encouragehealthierbehaviourinindividualsandhelpwiththeproactivemanagementofahealthylifestyle.Itputsconsumersincontrolofhealthandwell-being.Additionally,AIincreasestheabilityforhealthcareprofessionalstobetterunderstandtheday-to-daypatternsandneedsofthepeopletheycarefor,andwiththatunderstandingtheyareabletoprovidebetterfeedback,guidanceandsupportforstayinghealthy–although,aswehavenoted,thesheervolumeofdataisincreasinglydifficultforhumanstodealwith,ormakesenseof.
