-.z.路线泥沙馆〔SedimentationBuilding〕-图书馆〔TsinghuaUniversityLibrary〕-西操〔WestSportsGround〕-大礼堂〔Auditorium〕-新水利馆〔NewHydraulicEngineeringBuilding〕-清华学堂〔TsinghuaSchool〕-日晷〔Sundial〕-科学馆〔ScienceBuilding〕(-水木清华〔ShuimuTsinghua〕-近春园〔JinchunGarden〕-清华园〔TsinghuaGarden〕)-二校门〔TheoldGate〕泥沙馆-二校门-日晷-清华学堂-大礼堂-新水利馆-科学馆-工字厅-近春园-水木清华-图书馆-西操BriefintroductionofthehistoryofTsinghuaUniversityTheTsinghuaUniversityislocatedintheTsinghuaGarden,whichwastheimperialgardeninQingdynasty.In1901,Eight-NationAllianceinvadedBeijingandforcedtheQingdynastygovernmenttosigntheBo*erProtocol.AccordingtothisProtocol,Qinggovernmentneedtopayalargenumberofreparationstotheaggressorcountries.In1911,basedonapartofthisreparations,aSchoolnamed“Tsinghua*uetang〞wasbuiltasPreparatorySchoolforstudentstostudyinUnitedStates.“Tsinghua*uetang〞wasthepredecessoroftoday’sTsinghuaUniversity.Thename“NationalTsinghuaUniversity〞wasadoptedin1928.Sinceitsestablish,withamottoofSelf-DisciplineandSocialmitment,TsinghuaUniversityisdedicatedtoacademice*cellence,thewell-beingofChinesesocietyandtoglobaldevelopment.Today,mostnationalandinternationalrankingsplaceTsinghuaasoneofthebestuniversitiesinMainlandChina.SowecanseethreedifferentarchitecturalstylesofbuildingsinthecampusofTsinghuaUniversity.Theoldbuildingsaremainlylocatedinthewestof*uetangRoad,intheeastof*uetangRoadthereareallnewbuildingswhichwasbuiltafter1949.泥沙馆SedimentationBuildingSedimentationBuildingismainlybuiltfortheresearchofhydraulicsandriverdynamics.Itcontainsoffices,boardroomsandlaboratories.二校门TheOldGateTheOldGatewasbuiltin1909.TheGatewasthemainentrancetotheschoolcampusatthattime.Atthattime,theGatewasheavilyguarded.Inthoseyears,underclassmenwerenotallowedtogooutofthegatewithoutpermissionfromschoolauthorities.Inaddition,inordertopreservethesanctityofthelearningenvironment,outsidepeoplewithoutpermissionwerealsoforbiddentopassthroughthegate.In1933,afterthee*pansionoftheresidentialarea,theformerenclosingwallwasmovedtofurtherout.Anewgate,nowTsinghua'sWestGate,becamethenewmainentrance.Eversince,theoriginalgatehasbeencalledEr*iaoMen(means"thesecondschoolgate").TheOldGatewasdemolishedin1960's.DonatedbyTsinghuaUniversityAlumni,itwasrebuiltin1991,followingtheoriginaldesign.日晷SundialThesundialisaclassicaltimerusedinancienttimes.Itisagiftgivenbythegraduatesin1920.Itservesasareferenceforclasstimeforstudents,andalsoaremindertothemthateverysecondoftimeshouldbevalued.Itwascarvedwiththemotto"Actionsspeaklouderthanwords"inbothChineseandLatincharacterstogetherwiththedateofconstruction.Today,themotto"Actionsspeaklouderthanwords"hasalreadybeetheschoolspiritofTsinghuaUniversity.The

TheSundialstoodinfrontofTsinghua’sgrassyquadranglebeforethefoundationofPeople’sRepublicofChina(about1948).Theplanarsurfaceofthesundialturnedtobestonythen,sincetheformersilveronecoveredwithenameldisappeared.TsinghuaoftenhadstrugglemeetingonthegrassyquadrangleduringtheCulturalRevolution.TheovalgrassyquadranglewaschangedintoarectangleandtheSundialwasremovedinordertoenlargethefield.TheplacewheretheSundialusedtostandwasstuffedwithcement,andtheSundialwasmissing.AftertheCulturalRevolution,Tsinghuabegantocollecttheoldthingsoftheuniversity,andtheSundialwasfoundinapileofstones,butitsplanardisappeared.TheSundialweseenowadayshadbeenrepairedafterthat,anditsplanarwasnewlymade.Itwasheresincethe70thanniversaryofthefoundationofTsinghua.清华学堂Tsinghua*uetangTsinghua*uetangisoneofthelandmarksofTsinghuaUniversity.*uetangmeansschool,aplaceforteaching.TheconstructionofTsinghua*uetangwaspletedin1916.Itwasoneofthemainbuildingsoftheschoolatitsearlystage.ThefourChinesecharacterspaintedabovethemainentranceread"TsinghuaSchool",thefirstnameoftheinstitutionwhenitwasfounded.TheinscriptionwasbyNaTong,aGreatScholarandGrandMinisterinlateQingDynasty.Tsinghua*uetangservedasclassroomsforseniorstudentsatthebeginningoftheschool.Aftertheeastpartwasbuilt,itremainedadormitoryforseniorgraduatingstudentsforseveralyears.In1925,theInstituteofChineseClassicswassetuphere.Therenowned“FourTutors"intheInstituteofChineseClassics:LiangQichao,WangGuowei,ZhaoYuanren,ChenYinque,〔梁启超、王国维、元任、寅恪〕thefamousarcheologistLiJi,andlitterateurWuMiwerebroughttogether.Inthelastfewdecades,itwasusedasteachingbuildingandclassrooms.Nowitistheofficesofsomemainadministrationdepartments:theGraduateSchool,theundergraduateacademicdepartmentandtheR&Ddepartment.大礼堂AuditoriumTheAuditoriumisasymbolofTsinghuaUniversity.TheAuditoriumwasdesignedbyAmericanarchitectH.K.Murphyin1913,andpletedin1917.ItisoneofthefourmajorbuildingprojectscarriedoutbyTsinghuaSchool,togetherwithTsinghua*uetang,theoldlibrary,andthewestgymnasium.SincetheAmericandesignerdidn’tbelievethequalityofbuildingmaterialsinChina,theyimportedthecostingcorkfloors,chairsandeventheredbricksallfromAmerica.ThedesignofAuditoriumbasedontheimageoftheauditoriuminUniversityofPennsylvania.EndowedwiththefeatureofbothGreekandRomanbuilding,looksveryelegant.Foralongtime,thebuildinghasbeenlongviewedasthesymbolofpersistence,simplicityandindomitablewill.Thoughmorethan90yearshaspassed,theAuditoriumstillmaintainsquitewell.Large-scaledactivitieslikeeveryStudentFestivalofdifferentdepartmentsandsomeconcertsareoftenheldhere.新水利馆DepartmentofHydraulicEngineeringTheWaterConservancyBuildingishoststheDepartmentofHydraulicEngineering.Constructedintheyear1955.ItsdesignerisMr.ZhouWeiquan.Inordertomatchthestyleofthebuildingsaroundthegreatauditorium,thedesignerappliedthesamemethodsinhisgeneraldrawingarrangementandarchitecturalstylearrangement.Theappearanceofthebuildingconsistsofelementslikeredbrickwallandarchdoor,windowandgate.DepartmentofHydraulicEngineeringdatesbacktotheHydraulicEngineeringgroupandHydraulicEngineeringlaboratoryoftheCivilEngineeringDepartmentinthelate1920s.Intheschool-departmentadjustmentin1952,departmentofHydraulicanddepartmentofHydropowerEngineeringwerefounded.In1955,itmovedintothenewdepartmentbuildingandwasreestablishedasDepartmentofHydraulicEngineering.Thedepartmenthasastrongteachingstaff,includingsi*academiciansand40professors.TheformerPresidentofChina,HuJintaograduatedfromthisdepartmentin1965.智者乐水、仁者Thestatueof“ZhiZheLeShui,RenZheLeShan〞wasbuiltin2002tomemoratethe50thanniversaryoftheDepartmentofHydraulicEngineering.Thestatuewasdonatedbyalumnigraduatedin1965,includingourformerPresidentHuJintaoandformerMinisterofWaterResourcesWangShucheng.ThesentenceisfromConfucianAnalects.Theleftpartofthestatuerepresentshardmountainrocks,andtherightpartrepresentsflowingwater.Itmeanswisemenaresharp-minded,justlikeflowingwaters,kindmenarekindheartedandtolerant,justlikestaunchmountains.Thatishowthestatueesintobeing.科学馆ScienceBuildingTheScienceBuildingisalsooneoftheFourEarlyArchitecturesofTsinghuaUniversity.Itwasfirstbuiltin1917andwasfinished1919.AgainMr.H.K.Murphyaddedhise*pertiseandtalentstothedesignoftheScienceBuilding.TherearecharactersinbothChineseandoldEnglishof“SCIENCEBVILDING〞onthelintelofthedoorwhicharedistinguishedandsimple.Itwasusedforscienceteachingande*perimentswhenfirstbuiltbecauseitpossessesofthemostadvancedequipment.LateritservedasPhysicsDepartmentBuildingfor73yearstillthenewly-builtPhysicsDepartmentteachingbuildingcameintouse.Thisbuildingbroughtoutcountlessscientistsandmanyofthemarefamousallaroundtheworldfortheircontributiontoourearth,suchasWangGanchang,WangZhu*i,PengHengwu,QianSanqiang,HeZehuiandLinJiaqiao.〔王淦昌、王竹溪、恒武、钱三强、何泽慧、林家翘〕Amongthe23scientistshonoredbythecountryin1999fortheirgreatcontributionstotheastonishingacplishmentofthe“AtomicBomb,hydrogenBombandartificialsatellite〞,9graduatedfromPhysicsDepartmentofTsinghuaUniversity.Now,theScienceBuildingisthedreamingplacefortheyounggenerationnationwidewhoisinterestedinscience.清华园TsinghuaGardenThemorepopularnameofthegardenisGongZiTing--whichinChinesemeansH-ShapedHouse.Viewedfromabove,thecentralpartofthehouseresemblestheletter"H",withitstwohallsinthefrontandbackconnectedbyashortcorridorinthemiddle.

ThegardenwastheresidenceofaQingemperor'sbrother'sfamily.IntheearlydaysofTsinghuaSchool,thegardenwasusedastheschool'sfirstheadofficebuilding.Studentenrollmentlistswerepostedonthewallatthefrontgate.Forsomeyearsinitshistory,theeastroominthefrontsectionwasusedastheMusicCenter,thewestroomastheteacher'sreadingroomandthebacksectiontoacmodatedistinguishedforeignguests.ThegreatIndianpoetTagorestayedtherewhenhevisitedChinain1924.近春园〔荷塘月色〕JinchunGardenJinchunGardenwastheresidenceofemperor*ianFengbeforehesucceededhisfather.Afterhetookpower,hechangedthename“*ichungarden〞into“Tsinghuagarden〞ande*tendedthewholegarden.Inthesummerof1927,duringonesleeplessnight,thewell-knownProfessorZhuZiqingofTsinghua,wentforastrollaroundthelakeareatothinkaboutthetremendouschangesoccurringinChinesesociety.Whenthelovelylandscapecaughthisattention,hewasmovedtowritethenow-classicessay"TheViewoftheLotusPondintheMoonlight."水木清华ShuimuTsinghuaShuimuTsinghuawhichmeans"clearwaterandtreessurroundingTsinghua"isoneofthemostcaptivatingspotsinTsinghua.Itwasfoundedinthe18thcentury.Itusedtobeapartoftheimperialgarden,soitisalsocalled'gardenwithinagarden'.ThefourChinesecharacters"ShuiMuTsingHua"paintedonthetopofthemaingate,werecopiedfromaninscriptionbyEmperorKang*i.Ontheoppositeofthemaingate,theree*istsasculptureoffamousproserMr.ZhuZiqing.清华图书馆TsinghuaUniversityLibraryTheTsinghuaLibraryisoneofthelandmarksatTsinghuaUniversitywhichnowhasacollectionofmorethan4millionbooks.TsinghuaLibraryconsistsofthreeparts:theoldlibrary,YifulibraryandLiWenzhengLibrarywhichisalsocalledthenorthlibrary.Theoldlibraryalsoconsistsoftheearlypartandthelattere*tensionpart.TheTsinghuaLibraryhasbeenunderconstructionfourtimesanditslifespancoversmorethan90years.TheearlypartoftheoldlibrarywasdesignedbyafamousAmericanarchitectH.K.Murphyandwaspletedin1919.ItwasconsideredtobeoneoftheFourTsinghuaEarlyBuildings.Thee*tensionpartoftheoldlibrarywasfinishedin1931andcoveredanareaofthreetimesaslargeastheearlypart.TheYifulibrarywasbuiltin1991.ItwasdonatedbythefamousphilanthropistMr.ShaoYifuanddesignedbyacademicianMr.GuanZhaoyefromtheSchoolofArchitecture.Mr.GuanusedwhatmostTsinghuaoldarchitecturesadoptedsuchastheredbricksandgreytilesinordertokeepconsistencywiththestyleofthepreviousone.TheLiWenzhenglibrarywaspletedinthisyear.Itwas
