dingly.Ifsomeonelooksatyouwithaconfusedexpression,thiscouldindicatethattheyhavenotcompletelyunderstoodyourpoint.Youwillneedtoclarifyyourmessagebeforemovingon.Whilebeingknowledgeableaboutbodylanguageisvital,thevalueofempathyshouldnotbeunderstated.Seektounderstandtheotherperson’semotions,byputtingyourselfintheirshoesandlookingatthesituationfromtheirperspective.Someissuesmaybecomplicatedandyoumaybeconfusedaboutwhyothersfeeloractthewaytheydo.Ifyougiveseriousconsiderationtotheirpointsofview,however,youwillbeabletoseewhataccountsfortheiremotionsandempathizewiththem.Youmaynotapproveoftheirideasbutatleastyouwillseewheretheyarecomingfrom,whichmeansyoucanmakeadjustmentstoyourowntoneandchoiceofwords.Supposeyouarediscussingaprojectwithyourpartner,whohasjustlostanimportantbasketballgameandisinactive.Toengagehimorherinthediscussionandmakeyourcommunicationmoreeffective,youmayexpressyoursympathyby,forinstance,saying,“Iunderstandhowyoufeel.…”Effectivecommunicationwillallowyoutotackledifferencesanddisagreementsappropriatelyandimproveyourinteractionswithothers.Goodcommunicationskillswillalsohelpyoubuildtrustandgainotherpeoplesrespect,allowingrelationshipstobecomemorepositiveandproductive.So,getpractisingandgoodluck!ExtendedreadingBorrowedwords“Thesushirestaurant’smenuwasconfusing.”Isthereanythingspecialaboutthissentence?Well,allthewordsexcept“the”and"was”areborrowedfromotherlanguages!Thiscomesasnоsurprise,giventhatEnglishhasborrowedwordsfrommorethan300differentlanguages,includingLatin,Greek,FrenchandChinese.However,Englishisnotaloneinborrowingwordsfromotherlanguages—borrowedwordscanbefoundinalmostalllanguages.Forexample,ChinesewordsthatareoriginallyfromtheEnglishlanguageinclude“培根”(bacon),“坦克”(tank)and“高尔夫”(golf),andJapanesehasborrowedwordslike“豆腐”(tofu)fromChinese.Wordborrowingcomesaboutwhentwocultureswithdifferentlanguagesinteract.Thistendstohappenwhenthereisnosuitablewordforanobjectorideainthenativetongue.Thisphenomenonhasbeenoccurringforthousandsofyears.Inthecurrentageofglobalization,whencommunicationtechnologybringsdifferentculturesclosertogether,wordsareevenmorelikelytobeborrowedstraightfromthesourcelanguageatafasterpacethaneverbefore,especiallythoserelatedtotechnologicaldevelopments,suchas“email”and“Internet”.Thoughborrowingwordshasbecomefaster,theprocessisstillcomplex,andittakestimebeforenewwordsareintegratedintoeverydayspeech.Atfirst,theborrowedwordisonlyusedbybilingualspeakers.Itthenspreadstopeoplewhodonotknowtheoriginallanguage,andtheywillchangethepronunciationtofitthewaytheyspeak,almostunknowingly.Anexampleofthisistheword“kungfu”,whichreferstoChinesemartialarts.ThiswordcomesfromtheChinesewords“功夫”(gongfu).Overtime,thesoundsthatweredifficulttopronouncewerereplacedwithmorefamiliarones.Thelongeraborrowedwordhasbeeninuse,themoreitsoundsandevenlookslikethenativelanguage.Borrowedwordsareanoutcomeoflanguagedevelopmentthatcouldhardlybeavoided,butsomelanguagecommunitiesopposeadoptingwordsfromothercultures.Therearecountriesthatmakeinterventionstokeeptheirnativelanguagepureinordertodefendtheiridentity.TheFrenchspecificallyhaveanofficialorganizationthatcreatesnewwords,inordertoavoidborrowedwords.Somelanguageshaveanextremelysmallnumberofspeakers,suchastheNativeAmericanNavajoIndianlanguage,usedonlybythemembersofthetribe.Underthiscircumstance,itbecomesamatterofsurvivalforthenativelanguagetorejectoutsideinfluences.Whilesomecommunitiesarepessimisticabouttheexchangebetweenlanguages,therearealsootherlanguagesthatreadilywelcomeborrowedwords.English,especially,isbasedonamixofLatin,GreekandGermaniclanguages.TheEnglish-speakingcommunitydoesnothesitateinabsorbingforeignwordsintoitsdailyvocabulary.Infact,therehaveneverbeenanyformalacademicrestrictionsonnewborrowedwords.Borrowingwordsallowsthelanguagetocontinuetodevelop,enablingthecommunitytohaveamoreefficientlanguagewhichallowsthemtosharetheirexperienceswithanew-foundgrace.Itisalsothroughthosewordsthatnovelideasarespreadanddifferentbeliefsareexchangedmoreconvenientlyandquickly.AccordingtothelinguistEdwardSapir,“Itwouldbedifficulttopointtoacompletelyisolatedlanguage,”andforbetterorforworse,thetendencytoborrowwordshasnevergoneoutofstyle.Themoreinternationalandglobalizedtheworldbecomes,themorelanguagecharacteristicswillbesharedbetweennationsandcultures.Unit3CareersandskillsReadingWorktolive,livetoworkIfyouwereaskedthequestion,“Doyouworktoliveorlivetowork?”,whatwouldyouranswerbe?Somemightsaythatweworkbecausewehaveto,notleastbecauseweneedthesalarythatenablesustobefinanciallyindependent.Itiscertainlytruethatmostofusdojointhelabourforceonceourstudiesarecompleted.Indeed,itcouldbearguedthatoureducationisgearedtowardspreparingusforalifeofwork.However,earningalivingis,bynomeans,theonlyreasonwhywework—thereareotherimportantreasonsthatmotivateourentryintotheworldofwork.Throughtheworkwedo,ourgoalscanbeattainedandourpersonaldreamsachieved.Allofushavehaddreamsaboutonethingoranotherandworkoftenenablesustopursuethosedreams.HenryDavidThoreausaid,“…ifoneadvancesconfidentlyinthedirectionofhisdreams,andendeavo
