关键词:《小妇人》;乔;女权主义TheStudyofJoinLittleWomenfromtheProspectiveofFeminismDirector:WuSufang(CollegeofForeignLanguages,ZhejiangChineseMedicalUniversity,Hangzhou,Zhejiang,310053)Abstract:LittleWomeniswrittenbyanAmericanauthor,LouisaMayAlcott,whoisoneofthemostprominentwritersinAmericanliteratureaswellasafeminist.LittleWomenisoneofthemostsuccessfulandfamousworksofhers.ItisanovelwhichissetintheCivilWar,andbasedonthefoursisters’familylifeinNewEnglandintheUSAinthe19thcentury.Itreceivedalotofattentionwhenitpublished.ThisthesisisaimedatanalyzingJointheLittleWomentostatethepointofLouisaMayAlcott’sconceptoffeminism.ThisviewisreflectedincisivelyandvividlyontheheroinJo.Jo,whohasapassionforwritingandreadingandhercharactersareindependentandbrave.Sheisnotcontenttobeahousewifeandchoosesherfavoritejob—writing.Dislikingtheunreasonablerequestofthesociety—women’spowerislessthanmen’s.Thearticleiswrittenrespectivelyfromfourperspectives—freedom,love,equalityandindependencetoanalyzeofJo’sfeminismideas.Andcombiningwiththemodernsociety,itdissectsthesignificanceofJo’sfeminisminmodernsociety.Keywords:LittleWomen;Jo;feminismTheStudyofJoinLittleWomenfromtheProspectiveofFeminism1.IntroductionLouisaMayAlcottwasbornonNovember29,1832,theseconddaughterofAmosBronsonandAbigailAbbaMayAlcott.ShewasraisedinConcord,Massachusetts,asmalltowntothenorthofBostonthatwashometomanygreatwritersoftheday.LittleWomenisanovelpublishedin1868andwrittenbyAmericanauthorLouisaMayAlcott.ThestoryconcernsthelivesandlovesoffoursistersgrowingupduringtheAmericanCivilWar.ItisbasedonAlcott'sownexperiencesasachildinConcord,Massachusettswithherthreesisters,Anna,May,andElizabeth.Thenoveltellsoftheirprogressintoyoungwomanhoodwiththeadditionalstrainsofromance.Itisastoryoftheirgrowingmaturityandwisdomandthesearchforthecontentednessoffamilylife.Inthissituation,thepapertendstoanalyzethepursuitforfreedomanddemandoftruelove,embodimentofequality,anddesireforindependentpersonalityandindependentrightstomakespecialanalysisoffeminismonJoinEnglish.Indoingso,thereadersmighthaveadeepunderstandingofthefeminism.2.LiteratureReviewLittleWoman,oneoftheclassicsofAmericanliterature,waswrittenbyAmericanwoman——LouisaMayAlcott.Womaninthe19thcenturywerestilllimitedtotraditionalopinionsthattheywereopposedtobelongtothefamily,obeytheirhusbands’orders.Theycouldnothavethechancetocompeteequallywithmeninmanyfieldsofsociety.However,LouisaMayAlcottdidnotlookuponherselfastheadjunctofthemen.Shewasdeterminedtobreakthefettersonthewomen,andtriedtochooseaprofessiontomakealivingonherwaythroughthisroughandtumbleworld.Hence,thereisnodoubtthatLittleWomenoccupiesanessentialpositioninthehistoryofAmericanliteratureinthe19thcentury.2.1DefinitionandFeaturesofFeminismAstothemeaningoffeminism:“mostpeoplethink‘feminism’isaboutequalityofthesexes,andactivismtoachieveequalityofwomen”.(Johnson,2011,p30)Thistheoryiscalled:“Socialistfeminismandwasusedincreasinglyduringthe1970stodescribeamixedtheoreticalandpracticalmethodtoachievingwomen’sequality.Inaddition,thistheoryanalyzedtherelationbetweentheoppressionofwomenandotheroppressioninsociety.”(Linda,2011,p22)IntheCambridgedictionary,thedefinitionoffeminismisthebeliefthatwomenshouldbeallowedthesamerightsasmenandbetreatedinthesameway,butalsowhenitisusedtodescribeamanthatmeansthebehaviorofmanissimilartowomen.“AccordingtoMSmagazine,feminismsoundslikeanegativewordformostwomen.Theydon’tlikeitoruseit”.(Karol,2011,p28)However,averyinterestingarticlewhichisfromMeninFeminismsaid:“somemenseemtobeinterestedinFeminism;theyprefertoacquiremoreknowledgeofitandencouragemoreofthemtorealizethatfeminismbenefitseveryone.”(Lizzie,2003,p19)Therefore,tosomeextent,thereaderscanfindthatmalesandfemalesstillhavedifferentattitudestothisword.Forthefeaturesoffeminism,thefirstoneistostresswomen’sgenderdifferencesandtheirexpressioninliterarytextsandtextsinterpretation,thatis,genderpoeticsandgenderreading.Secondly,itputsemphasisontheexpressionofgendersymboldifference,advocatingwomen’sdiscourseandmaternalinstinctdiscourse.Besides,itestablisheswomen’sequalityofpoliticalrightsonthebasisoffemalesocialdifferenceanddiscoursedifference.2.2RelevantStudiesofJo’sFeminisminLittleWomeTherearemanyscholarswhothrowsomelightonthefeministinterpretationofLitterWomen.Althoughthebookisfilledwithsubmissivewomenwhoarecontentwithdomesticlife,agreatdealoffeministattentionconcentratesonwomen’sinfluencesonmen.Forexample,in“TheInfluenceofLittleWomen”,CarolynHeilbrunarguesthatthefascinationLittleWomenholdslieslessinJo’seaseinadoptingmalemannersandbehavior,thaninthefacilitywithwhichherwholefamilyrestructuresitselfonafemalepattern.(Kress,1997,p23)G.K.ChestertonnotedthatinLittleWomen,Alcott"anticipatedrealismbytwentyorthirtyyears
