animals,

in

Dakota

in

1993by

a

private

fossil

collector,

dinosaurs

could

have

evolved

a

heart

adaptedtowarm-blooded

circulation.Although

the

fact

that

soft

tissues

usually

posedbefore

they

could

fossilize

had

left

scientistssearching

in

darkness

for

centuries,fossil

organs

could

still

be

preserved

under

extreme

circumstances

such

as

rapidsediment

on

the

seabed.

Becausetoday

four-chambered

heart

is

only

foundinwarm-blooded

animals,

this

fossilheartindicates

thecloserelationshipbetween

dinosaurs

and

mammals.Second,

because

cold-blooded

animals

such

as

reptiles

couldn’t

maintain

theirbody

temperature

constantly,

they

have

to

rely

on

the

surrounding

environmentto

adjust

the

body

heat.

Thus,

if

dinosaurs

arecold-blooded,

theirhuge

bodysize

would

makeit

impossible

to

shift

between

basking

and

burrowing

asoftenas

today’s

lizards.Third,

for

huge

body

animals

to

maximize

their

energy

usage,

theymustmaintain

a

constant

body

temperature.

This

is

because

metabolismis

infactchemical

process

occurring

in

the

body,

which

burns

food

in-takeand

releasesenergy

supporting

growth.

For

this

chemical

reaction

to

function

optimally,keeping

organs

work
