Everyonehadagoodlaugh,andsoonwewerealltellingstoriesofourmostembarrassingmoments。ItcamearoundtoFrankwhosatquietlylisteningtotheothers。Someonesaid,"Comeon,Frank。Tellusyourmostembarrassingmoment。"

Frankbegan,"IgrewupinSanPedro。MyDadwasafisherman,andhelovedthesea。Hehadhisownboat,butitwashardmakingalivingonthesea。Heworkedhardandwouldstayoutuntilhecaughtenoughtofeedhefamily。Notjustenoughforourfamily,butalsoforhisMomandDadandtheotherkidsthatwerestillandhome。"Helookedatusandsaid,"IwishyoucouldhavemetmyDad。Hewasabigman,andhewasstrongfrompullingthenetsandfightingtheseasforhiscatch。Whenyougotclosetohim,hesmelledtheocean。"

Frank"svoicedroppedabit。"Whentheweatherwasbadhewoulddrivemetoschool。Hewouldpullrightupinfront,anditseemedlikeeverybodywouldbestandingaroundandwatching。Thenhewouldleanoverandgivemeabigkissonthecheekandtellmetobeagoodboy。Itwassoembarrassingforme。HereIwastwelveyearsold,andmyDadwouldleanoverandkissmegood-bye!"

Hepausedandthenwenton,"IrememberthedayIthoughtIwastoooldforagood-byekiss。Whenwegottheschoolandcametoastop,hehadhisusualbigsmile。Hestartedtoleantowardme,butIputmyhandupandsaid,"No,Dad。"ItwasthefirsttimeIhadevertalkedtohimthatway,andhehadthissurprisedlookedonhisface。

Amanmayusuallybeknownbythebookshereadsaswellasbythecompanyhekeeps;forthereisacompanionshipofbooksaswellasofmen;andoneshouldalwaysliveinthebestcompany,whetheritbeofbooksorofmen。

Agoodbookmaybeamongthebestoffriends。Itisthesametodaythatitalwayswas,anditwillneverchange。Itisthemostpatientandcheerfulofcompanions。Itdoesnotturnitsbackuponusintimesofadversityordistress。Italwaysreceivesuswiththesamekindness;amusingandinstructingusinyouth,andcomfortingandconsolingusinage。

Menoftendiscovertheiraffinitytoeachotherbythemutuallovetheyhaveforabookjustastwopersonssometimesdiscoverafriendbytheadmirationwhichbothentertainforathird。Thereisanoldproverb,‘Loveme,lovemydog。”Butthereismorewisdominthis:”Loveme,lovemybook。”Thebookisatruerandhigherbondofunion。Mencanthink,feel,andsympathizewitheachotherthroughtheirfavoriteauthor。Theyliveinhimtogether,andheinthem。

Agoodbookisoftenthebesturnofalifeenshriningthebestthatlifecouldthinkout;fortheworldofaman’slifeis,forthemostpart,buttheworldofhisthoughts。Thusthebestbooksaretreasuriesofgoodwords,thegoldenthoughts,which,rememberedandcherished,becomeourconstantcompanionsandcomforters。

Bookspossessanessenceofimmortality。Theyarebyfarthemostlastingproductsofhumaneffort。Templesandstatuesdecay,butbookssurvive。Timeisofnoaccountwithgreatthoughts,whichareasfreshtodayaswhentheyfirstpassedthroughtheirauthor’sminds,agesago。Whatwasthensaidandthoughtstillspeakstousasvividlyaseverfromtheprintedpage。Theonlyeffectoftimehavebeentosiftoutthebadproducts;fornothinginliteraturecanlongsurviveebutwhatisreallygood。

Booksintroduceusintothebestsociety;theybringusintothepresenceofthegreatestmindsthathaveeverlived。Wehearwhattheysaidanddid;weseetheasiftheywerereallyalive;wesympathizewiththem,enjoywiththem,grievewiththem;theirexperiencebecomesours,andwefeelasifwewereinameasureactorswiththeminthesceneswhichtheydescribe。

Thegreatandgooddonotdie,eveninthisworld。Embalmedinbooks,theirspiritswalkabroad。Thebookisalivingvoice。Itisanintellecttowhichonstilllistens。

IntheOrientyoungbullsaretestedforthefightarenainacertainmanner。Eachisbroughttotheringandallowedtoattackapicadorwhopricksthemwithalance。Thebraveryofeachbullisthenratedwithcareaccordingtothenumberoftimeshedemonstrateshiswillingnesstochargeinspiteofthestingoftheblade。HenceforthwillIrecognizethateachdayIamtestedbylifeinlikemanner。IfIpersist,ifIcontinuetotry,ifIcontinuetochargeforward,Iwillsucceed。

Occasionally,Dadwouldgetouthismandolinandplayforthefamily。Wethreechildren:Trisha,MonteandI,GeorgeJr。,wouldoftensingalong。SongssuchastheTennesseeWaltz,HarborLightsandaroundChristmastime,thewell-knownrenditionofSilverBells。"SilverBells,SilverBells,itsChristmastimeinthecity"wouldringthroughoutthehouse。OneofDad"sfavoritehymnswas"TheOldRuggedCross"。Welearnedthewordstothehymnwhenwewereveryyoung,andwouldsingitwithDadwhenhewouldplayandsing。AnothersongthatwasoftensharedinourhousewasasongthataccompaniedtheWaltDisneyseries:DaveyCrockett。Dadonlyhadtohearthesongtwicebeforehelearneditwellenoughtoplayit。"Davey,DaveyCrockett,KingoftheWildFrontier"wasafavoritesongforthefamily。Heknewweenjoyedthesongandtheprogramandwouldoftengetoutthemandolinaftertheprogramwasover。Icouldnevergetoverhowhecouldplaythesongssowellafteronlyhearingthemafewtimes。Ilovedtosing,butIneverlearnedhowtoplaythemandolin。ThisissomethingIregrettothisday。

WhenDadwasyounger,heworkedforhisfatheronthefarm。Hisfatherwasafarmerandsharecroppedafarmforthemanwhoownedtheproperty。In1950,ourfamilymovedfromthefarm。Dadhadgainedemploymentatthelocallimestonequarry。WhenthequarryclosedinAugustof1957,hehadtoseekotheremployment。HeworkedforOwensYachtCompanyinDundalk,MarylandandforToddSteelinPointofRocks,Maryland。WhileworkingatToddSteel,hewasinvolvedinanaccident。Hisjobwastorollangleironontoaconveyorsothattheweldersfartheruptheproductionlinewouldhaveittocompletetheirjob。OnthisparticulardayDadgotthethirdindexfingerofhislefthandmashedbetweentwopiecesofsteel。Thedoctorwhooperatedonthefingercouldnotsaveit,andDadendeduphavingthetipofthefingeramputated。Hedidn"tloseenoughofthefingerwhereitwouldstophimpickingupanything,butitdidimpacthisabilitytoplaythemandolin。
