BorninMay31,1819intoaworking-classfamily,thesecondsonofacarpenter.Largelyself-taught,readalotofworksofShakespeare,Homer,DanteandtheBible.In1836,asateacherintheone-roomschoolhousesofLongIsland.Continuingtoteachuntil1841,thenturningtojournalismasafull-timecareer.
