nDesmirail,whoacquiredthelandattheendofthe17thcenturyaspartofadowry,broughtbyoneoftheRauzandaughters.Hegavehisnametotheproperty,andhisdescendantsmaintainedownershipuntilthe19thcentury,althoughbythetimeofthe1855classificationthepropertywasintheownershipofM.Sipière,whowasalsomanageratChateauMargaux.In1860thisgentlemanaddedanattractivechateautotheestate,althoughhewasonlytoenjoyitforafewdecades;in1905thepropertypassedtoRobertMendelssohn,abankerfromBerlinandnephewofthegreatcomposer.In1914Germanownershipresultedintheseizureoftheproperty,andbythisrouteitcameintothehandsofMartialMichel,aglovemanufacturer,whoremainedtheproprietoruntil1938whenhesoldthechateauitselftoPaulZugerofChateauMarquisd'AlesmeBecker,andthevineyardsandDesmirail'brand'toChateauPalmer.Thepropertywasthusbrokenup,andindeedtheoriginalDesmirailchateauremainspartoftheAlesme-Beckerestatetoday;thesmartbuildingsthatserveasChateauDesmirailtoday(picturedaboveandbelow),inthevillageofCantenac,wereacquiredbyLucienLurtonafterbuyingthevineyardsin1981.Intheintervalbetween1938and1981thevineyardswereharvestedalongsidethoseofPalmer,andDesmirailasanindependentwineceasedtoexist,whichexinstheforty-plusyearhiatusthatonefindswhensearchingforoldervintages.ItwasLucienLurtonthatrecreatedtheestate,beginningwiththe1981vintage.By1992,however,hehadpassedcontroltohissonDenis,inthesamemannerthathepassedcontrolofhisotherestatestotherestofhistenchildren.DenisremainsinchargeatDesmirailtoday.ThevineyardsfeaturethegravellysoilsthatcharacterisethebettervineyardsoftheleftbankoftheGironde,althoughtherearealsoareasofsandandclay.Thereareapproxima
