laughinggroupiesseemedtofollowhernomatterwhereshewasheaded,whetheritwasthe

cafeteriaorthebathroom.

Beingintelligent,beautiful,andpopularwould9vebeenenoughfbrmostpeople,butnotKayla.

Shehadtobeonemorethingontopofitall:The.Meanest.Girl.On.The.Planet.

Shealwaysseemedtobemakingfunofmyfriendsandme—whatwewerewearing,howwe

talked,what“dumb”expressionswehappenedtohaveonourfacesatanygivenmoment.

Hercrueltywasn'tlimitedtomysocialgroup,either——oreventhehumanspecies.Onetime,

duringGermanclass,abirdsmashedintothewindowanddied.Whileeveryoneelsestoodthere

horrified,Kaylastartedlaughingbecausethebird“lookedstupidwhenithittheglass.”

AboutamonthafterspottingtheSkylinelist,Iwasonceagainworkinginmydad'sclassroom

afterschoolwhenKaylawalkedinunexpectedly.Quickly,Iduckedmyhead,hopingshewouldn't

AsIsatbythestinkyturtletank,outliningmyAPEnglishpaper,Kaylamadehercall.I'mnot

surewhatitwasabout.Iwashonestlytryingmyhardestnottoeayesdrop.

Butblockingouttheconversationbecameimpossiblewhenthewomanontheotherendofthe

linestartedscreamingatKaylasoloudlythatIcouldheareverysyllable.

Kaylatriedtoreasonwithher,butthescreamingcontinued.Meanwords.Nastywords.Words

Kaylaherselfhadsaidmanytimesaboutmyfriendsandme.

Stupid.Dumb.Idiot.Loser.

Itriedtomakemyselfdeafandinvisibleatthesametime.Whenthecallfinallyended,Kayla

rushedfromtheroomwithoutlookinginmydirection.Hercheekswerered,butIdon'tthinkshe

wascrying.Iwould'vebeen.

WhileIattemptedtogobacktoworkonmyEnglishpaper,thephonecallhauntedme.Ikept

wonderingifthescreamingwomanwasKayla'smother.Myownmotherneverwould'vesaid

thosewordstome,nomatterhowbadlyIscrewedup.IfeltsomethingIneverthoughtI'dfeelfor

myarchenemy—pity.

Quickly,Ishookawaythethought.No.ThiswasKayla.TheMeanGirl.Afterallthesnide

commentsandhaughtylooksshe'dthrownmyway,shedidn'tdeserveanyemotionexcept

cotUempt.

AfewweekswentbyandFdmostlyforgottenaboutthephonecall.Iwaswalkingtolunchone

afternoonwhenIspottedaspirednotebooklyinginthehallway.Therewasnonameonthecover,

soIdecidedtotakeittotheoffice.

carelesslyleftoutinthehallwayforanyonetofind.

Injustafewshortwords,Kayladescribedhowshefeltaboutbeingofmixedracialheritage.

Shewasblackwhenshewaswithherblackfriendsandwhitewhenshewaswithherwhitefriends,

butsheneverreallyfitwitheithergroup.Iwasshockedtolearnthatherskincolor,whichIhad

alwaysseenasbeautiful,wasactuallyasourceofisolaikm,confusionandlowself-esteemforher.

Carefully,Islippedthepaperbackintothenotebook.

Ididn'tknowwhattodowiththeinformationI'djustlearned.Kayla,thegirlwhoneverwent
