thattheiranswersweresplitbetweenthefirstsetofwordsandsecond.Twoweekslater,theywere

giventhesametestagain.Thistime,mostofthemonlygavethefirstsetofwords.Theyappearedto

havecompletelyforgottenthesecondset.

Thestudyconfirmsthattheresponseswelearnfirstarethosethatremainstrongestovertime.We

maytrytochangeoutways,butafterawhile,theresponsethatcomestomindfirstisusuallythe

firstonewelearned.Themorethatresponseisused,themoreautomaticitbecomesandtheharder

itbecomestorespondinanyotherway.

Thestudythereforesuggeststhatovertime,ourbadhabitsalsobecomeautomatic,learnedbehavior.

OperationMigration

IfyoulookupattheskyintheearlyfallinthenorthernpartofNorthAmerica,youmayseegroups

ThewhoopingcraneisthelargestbirdthatisnativetoNorthAmerica.Thesebirdsalmost

disappearedinthe1800s.By1941,therewereonlyabout20cranesalive.Inthe1970s,peoplewere

worriedthatthesecreatureswereindangerofdisappearingcompletely.Asaresult,theUnited

Statesidentifiedwhoopingcranesasanendangeredspeciesthattheyneededtoprotect.

Someresearcherstriedtohelp.Theybegantobreedwhoopingcranesinspecialparkstoincrease

thenumberofbirds.Thisplanwassuccessful.Therewerealotofnewbabybirds.Asthebirds

becameolder,theresearcherswantedtoreturnthemtonature.However,therewasaproblem:These

youngbirdsdidnotknowhowtomigrate.Theyneededhumanhelp.

In2001,somepeoplehadacreativeidea.TheyformedanorganizationcalledOperationMigration.

Thisgroupdecidedtouseverylightairplanes,insteadofbirds,toleadtheyoungwhoopingcranes

ontheirfirsttripsouth.Theypaintedeachairplanetolooklikeawhoopingcrane.Eventhepilots

worespecialclothingtomakethemlooklikecranes.Thecranesbegantotrusttheairplanes,andthe

planworked.

Today,planesstillleadbirdsacrossapproximately1,200miles(1,931kilometers),fromtheUnited

States-CanadianbordertotheGulfofMexico.Theyleavethebirdsatdifferentsites.Ifatripis

successful,thebirdscantravelontheirowninthefuture.Then,whenthesebirdsbecomeparents,

theywillteachtheiryoungtomigrate.ThepeopleofOperationMigrationthinkthisistheonlyway

tomaintainthewhoopingcranepopulation.

OperationMigrationworkswithseveralotherorganizationsandgovernmentinstitutes.Together,

Adolphmadethefirstpairofathleticsshoeswithspikes(钉),producedontheDasslers'kitchen

On1stJuly1924theyformedashoecompany,DasslerBrothersLtdandtheyworked

togetherformanyyears.ThecompanybecamesuccessfulanditprovidedtheshoesforGermany's

athletesatthe1928and1932OlympicGames.

Butin1948thebrothersargued.Nooneknowsexactlywhathappened,butfamilymembers

havesuggestedthattheargumentwasaboutmoneyorwomen.TheresultwasthatAdolphleftthe

company.HisnicknamewasAdi,andusingthisandthefirstthreelettersofthefamilyname,

RudolphrelocatedacrosstheRiverAurachandfoundedhisowncompanytoo.Atfirsthe

wantedtocallitRuda,buteventuallyhecalleditPuma,afterthewildcat.ThefamousPumalogo

ofthejumpingcathashardlychangedsince.

Afterthebigsplitof1948AdolphandRudolphneverspoketoeachotheragainandtheir

companieshavenowbeenincompetitionforoversixtyyears.Bothcompanieswereformany

yearsthemarketleaders,thoughAdidashasalwaysbeenmoresuccessfulthanPuma.Ahiphop

group,RunDMC,hasevenwrittenasongcalled"MyAdidas*'andin2005AdidasboughtReebok,
