Theuseofthislittle-knownpracticehasacceleratedinrecentyears,as

tuition)andimprovetheirgraduationrates.Whenthispracticefirststarted
decadesago,itwasusuallylimitedtofreshmen,togivethemasecondchanceto
takeaclassintheirfirstyeariftheystruggledintheirtransitiontocollege-level
courses.Butnowmostcolleges,saveformanyselectivecampuses,allowall
undergraduates,andevengraduatestudents,togettheirlowgradesforgiven.
Collegeofficialstendtoemphasizethatthegoalofgradeforgivenessisless
aboutthegradeitselfandmoreaboutencouragingstudentstoretakecourses
criticaltotheirdegreeprogramandgraduationwithoutincurringabigpenalty.
